View Full Version : Mortar on brass fixtures- cleaning suggestions?

Hi Guys, the mason on a project I am working on mucked up half of my rail lights with a haze and some fine streaks of mortar. Has anyone run across a good way to clean them without killing the finish? Not sure about muriatic acid. I'm afraid it could destroy the finish also but I have not tried it either though.

What is the finish on those fixtures? If raw brass then I would not worry about using an acid to clean as it will just return them to the original raw finish. Same with raw copper. If they are a factory applied finish then stay away from the harsh acid and try some vinegar/water and LOTS of elbow grease. You could always ask the mason to help out, or pay for a replacement set of fixtures!

They are Unique Vanguards with the factory bronze finish. Its probably going to take more elbow grease than anything. I could try an efflorescence cleaner that is used to clean pavers. I'll have to check the label to make sure its not too harsh.
