Since the winters here in Alaska are so long you have to have hobbies. One of mine happens to be wilderness survival and camping/hiking. This is my "training" spot, where I like to test out new equipment and practice skills. It's fairly close to home, but very secluded. The trail is over 20 miles long that circles the Lake.

This trip was last fall. The temps were in the 20's. It was supposed to be a day trip, but I ended up staying the night.

This trip was in Novemeber and I stayed out for 3 days. This place is beautiful in the winter.

Winter camping is some of the best. It is usually not something that you take the whole family on though.

In college, one of my classes was on wilderness survival. We spent 3 days in the Canadian Rockies in the winter. We built our own shelters, cooked our own food, made our own latrines, etc. It was a blast - some of my best memories ever.

In order to get ready for that trip, I decided to test out my sleeping bags. I had a light summer bag along with a sleeping bag that my dad had found beside the road. I would put them one inside the other and it seemed to work. I waited until it got really cold one night and spent the night under the stars. It was -40 that night. My feet got rather cold (I should have worn my boot inserts to bed) but I did sleep the whole night - more or less.

That is one of my main claim's to fame. Not many people can say that they slept outside when it was -40.
