Something went wrong with the first post, so here it is again:

I need to replace the starter rope on my BS 18 hp Vanguard.

Is this a do-it-yourself job or should I ship it to the shop?

Any tips or hints would be appreciated. Thanks---Mike

I don't have a Briggs, I have a Kawasaki, but the starter rope is a breeze to replace. Grab your wrenches and dive in. Probably only take a few minutes.
Buy an extra one to carry with you, in case you have to replace it on the job someday. That reminds me, I've already used my extra. I'd better get another.

Take shroud off engine. Remove pieces off old rope. Wind spring tight and hold in place with screw driver and push new rope through shroud and into clutch pully. Knot it so it doesnt pull back through, remove screwdriver and rope will wind. Re-install and you're ready to go. Pretty easy 10-15 minute job.

I recently replaced the rope on a 2HP BNS and it was no trouble, took about 10 minutes to do, real easy. Good luck!:)
