A few weeks ago someone posted a note on how to build a backlapper with a cordless drill. Does anyone know how to do this.

Thanks.

Welcome to LS.
My advice to you is to use the red "search" button in the upper right hand corner of the main page.

Are you trying to back lap a reel mower? Why can't you reverse the gearbox to back lap the reel. That is all I have to do with the reel attachment I have for a Gravely walk behind.

I searched but couldn't find the post on how to use a cordless drill to backlap my reel mower.

To Gravelly man: I have an older (1992) Toro 3100 Triplex that I use to cut my croquet lawn (15,000 sq ft). I cut it at 1/8 inch!!!
The newer Toro models (after1996?) will allow you to reverse the gearing to backlap, mine won't allow me to do that.

I have never done field or course maintenance, as a matter of fact, the only reel mower I've ever used was an antique push model, just messing around.

School me on this.....whats is backlapping??

It's like grinding valves or honing a knife. A compound is applied to the reel and bedknife and the reel is spun in reverse. This is to ensure an evenly matched mateing surface and touch up the leading edge of the reel blades.

On my old Locke we would back lap and then adj clearance. We'd lay 2 strips of newspaper together and feed them into the reel. Properly adjusted it would cut the top sheet clean and not touch the bottom sheet. When you hear the blades rubbing across the bed knife the reel is too tight. We'd check the adj on each end and middle to be sure it was right.

I welded a socket onto the end of one reel. Then i cut the female end off a soccket extension and ground 3 flat sides on the shank. Put it in a 1/2" slow speed drill and it worked great.

That sounds like a very nice way to do it. Necessity has forced you to be creative.

Backlapping is a touch up done on reel mowers we backlap our mowers any were from 4-8 times a season but some think that is all reel mowers need but thats not true they still need a sharpening yearly and bed knife replacement depending on wear. Just dropping some info. Sorry haven't seen a backlapper made from a drill our mowers all have onbourd backlapping systems.

You had better call me about these reels and proper set up. Time and space will not allow me to get in to all that is necessary for single point, cam ecentric, rear roller, rear roller, reels found on Toro GM 3100 tri-plex machines. Call 830-693-0598, and I will assist any way I can. Steve
