I am looking to buy a new 72" mower and was wondering how much horsepower should I get with this size machine?

The more the merrier. I would go with at least a 31 turbol diesel 3 cylinder. If you look to DC, the 30 generac has the power or you could get the 50 hp turbo.

If a lot is good and more is better. than too much is just right.

Ok I forgot to say that this purchase would be gas only! I am allergic to diesel. Also with all the trouble that generac is having I think I would pass on that engine! I am really wondering what would be the minimum hp. you think I should look at? Or should I just get the most hp that I can find!

One of the things you need to consider is that all engines are not created equal. For instance a 25hp kohler engine and say a 24hp onan engine do not share the same torque, and torque is what you are going to need. Just something to think about.

I have never regretted over buying on horsepower. I would get as much as I could.

We used d/c city slickers for several years and found them to be pretty decent power except in real heavy stuff. I have been switching to diesel power in the bladerunner mower and I will say that when you have had power you do not want to go back! I would recommend the biggest engine in gas power that you can afford!

Another thing to consider is what brand of mower you are buying! A 25hp engine on brand x may not have the same power as it does on brand z. There are several reasons but one of the big reasons is the hydralic system and how it is driven, some are just more effecient than others.

By the way grass pro what brand or brands of mowers are you looking to purchase?

I think one of them would be a bladerunner unless you are not happy with the one that you got earlier this year. Just currious!

Exactly!!!!!!!!! Pick the mower that fits your budget, then get the next biggest! It won't be too much. Those 72's have some serious blade mass and weight under them.

I had a 25hp robin on a 60" and it had a lot more power than a 25hp kohler on the same unit.

Most of the time I don't even need to run it wide open, just at about 3200 RPM. The Gravely deck is very effiecient.

BUT there are times in tall grass, esp uphill, that the machine becomes seriously underpowered.

If you go air cooled get a Kohler 28 EFI, but a 3 cyl liquid cooled will be stronger, esp because of less power-pulse.

Of course diesel is your best choice but you have ruled that out.

I bought a s burb n turb n DC prolly about a month ago and i mow road side parks and they are really tall and it has no problem cutting them. The only thing that could out cut it is the 50 horse diseal DC they make

That 50hp diesel is actually only 41.4hp!

yes I am very happy with my bladerunner, and the 72" that I am looking at is a bladerunner!

Does anyone have an opinion on what brand of engine to buy?

I have yet to run into any thing with too much power. I have always found more would have been better.

You mention the diesel, how are you allergic to it???

diesel fumes or even the contact of the fuel makes me break out like I am on fire!

That sucks.

I would be blued, screwed, and tattoed if I had to give up my PS piclup. Going back to a gasser would suck.

Dang. That must really suck. No diesel? I couldnt imagine being without my diesels! Yuck! Especially my F-350 Powerstroke.
Get the largest HP engine you can find, thats the best bet. Never scrimp on power. Its well worth your money. If you have to special order the darn thing then do it.

I see in the bladerunner forum they are building or have built a twin engine mower!
