I'm glad I found this site i've found out a lot from reading the posts. I'm looking at two ztr mowers they are both 18hp twin cylinders but one has a honda motor and the other has a kohler. I was wondering if one of these motors is far better than the other or are they comparable? Which would cost more to service parts wise?

I will go along with that Honda is better in my opinion.

Honda makes a great engine if you stay below about 10 HP. Honda engines larger than that are not worth a darn from my experience. They are troublesome, expensive to get fixed, and parts are expensive and often hard to find. For twin cyl. engines, go with Kohler or Kawasaki.:)

In my experience, go with Honda if its a small engine, single cylinder. If not that, go with Kawasaki, if you cant get that, special order the darn thing. My two Kohlers I have had both sucked, I hated them.

Larger honda motors are major headaches. Get kawi or kohler for large motors.

I would sure like to know what types of problems you have had with the Hondas, other than just "a lot of problems". What size engines and what problems?

I had a 17 HP V-twin Honda engine. Its biggest problem was reliability. That thing just didnt want to start after three months, and then it just didnt start at all after 4. That alone turned me off. I have heard lots of bad about them as well.

Both honda and kohler are good engines. We tried the 24hp honda but could not get enough torque out of the engine. The kohler gives a much better torque curve.

Again, i shall remind people that Dodge makes the Viper. Dodge also made a K-car!

APPLES AND ORANGES!

Also, how was the motor cared for?

I just love how people say "stay away from any honda motors over 10hp" Does that mean i should sell my 250R quad....or my 300 4x4 quad.....or what about my 91 accord that wont die?

My father has a honda 13hp motor on his lawn mower....it has over 1200 hours on it...no rebuild yet...runs perfect. Might be because he takes care of it well.

I baught a ztr this summer with a 20hp honda on it. If i ever have a problem with it, i will surely let everyone here know about it.
