I highly recommend using briggs filters. Aftermarkets are not made exactly the same and can cause damage.

To me the extra couple dollars is not worth the cost of a new engine.

My Jr & Jr36 both have the Briggs Vanguard 16hp. I use Fram 3614 on them with 5W-30 Full synthetic oil each change. Haven't had a problem for 3 yrs now. When it comes time to change the hydro filters, buy them from a mower shop. The screens in them are specific micron size and they are not a typical oil filter.
