I'm not sure how many is a lot for a 3/4 ton truck, but i've got an 03 silverado 2x4 with 186,000 miles and 7500 hours. its been a good truck just not sure how many hours is a lot.

7500 hours? Your truck has an Hour meter?

It's probably toast. Trash it. The piston are ready to explode. Those trucks are only rated for 6000 hours.

If you want, you can mail it to me and scrap it for you. I know a guy.

thats good news countryside, i'd like to get 230k out of my truck, what have you dont for major maintenance on it? so far i've replaced the Idler arm, fuel/water pump, and oil lines.... the only "real major" work done is a new radiator but the place that did that messed up and it had to be done twice but i'm real happy with it, thinking about a tranny flush next and calling it good till something breaks

I think only the diesels have an hour meter at least the one ton does with a 6.0 and the 1/2 ton doesn't. These are Fords. I have like 25000 miles with 530 hours. My work truck at the power company had like 2700 hours but only 10k miles. It had a bucket and a lot of time sleeping with a/c on.

on chevys you hold the tripometer reset button down for like 3 seconds with the engine off.

My 1994 Chevy doesn't have an hour meter, but has 230,000 miles and still running strong with the 4.3L. My 2007 has 40,000 miles on the 6.0L gas engine and running good. I have no idea how many hours nor do I care. Miles are what you need to look at. With proper maintenance 250,000 to 300,000 should be doable IMO.

Miles mean nothing if you idle your truck a lot. I saw a chart somewhere, I don't remember, that compares miles to hours...i.e. change your oil every 3000 miles or xxx hours.

If your truck doesn't sit for hours idling, then hours aren't important with regard to oil changes.

That's an average of 24.8 miles per hour which tells you that thing did a lot of stop and go or had a lot of idle time. Either way the engine has had a bit of a rough life.

I do a fair amount of reading and what I have seen about my truck is that Cummins considers anything under 35 mph average "severe duty".

A glitch it is, I'm pretty sure you haven't averaged 88.4 mph. ;) For some reason the hour meters in these trucks are prone to resetting for no apparent reason. My 2005 has 27000 miles but the hour meter only shows 200 after resetting itself a few months back. On mine (6.0 gas) you just toggle through the odometer button to see the hour meter.

I think someone told me the hour meter resets if both the batterys are unhooked on the diesels but I'm not completely sure.
