Applying Fertilizer to grub damaged areas?

Hi. I'm new to the forum and lawn care in general. I just purchased some property (my great uncle's) and have noticed some significant grub damage in the back and side yards. He used to take pride in having one of the nicest lawns in town. I recently applied diazonon (sp?) and was wandering if I just wasted my time and money. The grubs were probably 1" long and were still present just under the grass. Most of the grass could be rolled up like carpet so I'm assuming the roots are probably dead.

Would I be wasting my time and money if I were to apply some fertilizer to this lawn and could this grass re-root and come back in the spring? If it doesn't come back in the spring, should I reseed over the existing dead lawn or remove all the dead, treat the soil, then completely reseed the lawn? It is currently composed of Kentucky Bluegrass, but I've been told a fescue (Crossfire II) would be easier to take care of in the summer due to it's better drought resistance qualities.

Why are the roots dead?

The grub did not kill the roots? They ate them cutting them off short much like a sod cutter.

Fert it and it should recover next spring.

I think it is to cold for anything but seeding with rye now if you want to see it before next spring.

Make sure also that you control the grubs next season.
