View Full Version : Sears Craftsman riding lawn mower help

A friend (not in the landscaping biz :) ) has a 15 yr. old Craftsman 14.5 Hp riding lawn mower and was cutting grass in the rain a few weeks ago. He said the wet grass started jamming up the mower blades but kept cutting anyway. Afterwards it seemed as if the belt stretched as anytime you'd hit thicker grass it would start to bog down. He just called & told me that it's gotten real bad, when you hit thick grass (that it should be able to cut easily) it bogs down and starts to squeal and both the blades & engine RPMs slow down considerably. I told him I wasn't sure what it was but that it sounds like the clutch, any ideas, other than not cutting w/ a POS in the rain?!

Well shucks, You deprived me of that one ! :laugh:


He needs to pop the belt off and check/free spin the blade spindles and idler pulleys, He could have one trying to lock up.

Has he replaced the belt yet ? Model numbers could be helpful as well.....

Depending on the model, some have adjusting nuts on the cable and some have a shim adjustment. I have found, in most cases, a new belt will take care of the problem, providing the spindle assemblies/idlers are OK, as Rob suggests.

What are other techs/owners opinions of the recent Sears replacement belts? I've had two bad experiences with their belts--both with a poor wrap. One came unwrapped over a 6" length in just a 10 minute test run in my drive. The other came unwrapped in under an hour of use.

He's not sure of the model # as it's an old tractor. It's a 6 sp. w/ a Briggs & Stratton 14.5 Hp OHV motor & 42" deck... The mod. # is still on the motor plate, but he couldn't find one on the lawn mower, prob. got wore off :(

On Sears(AYP) riders, the model numbers are usually on a decal under the seat.

I have been seeing the belt raps peal back like a snake skin on the sears and tractor supply belts this year, figured it was just a fluke.
