What is a good solution to remove mortar from pavers?

A detergent soap and scrub brush works good. Use like a tide laundry soap.

Are you looking to reclaim some pavers, or just clean the surface after installation?

If the latter, how old is the mortar?

Just cleanup after getting a little messy building the firepit. I'm just looking for an alternative to acid washing if possible. The mortar is only a few day's old.

Hammer and a chisel.

Stains not actual mortar, unless you trying to be a funny guy.

Look at Prosoco for the right cleaner, which depends on material & brick color. Vana-trol & Detergent 600 are the most common though. Still acidic & reactive, but far safer than just cutting muratic at 10:1.

If the pavers are smooth & dense, something like Tide will work within the first day or two, along with a brillo/3-M pad.

Try a rubbing stone. They're like a grinding wheel material with a red handle. I cleaned some caps with one. It will remove the stain along with some of the paver surface.

That's a good option. Along similar lines, you can get an extra paver (preferably in the same or similar color), and use it as a rub brick.
