Mulch Yard

Ok I have been thinking about opening a mulch yard. I would like to keep it simple.

1 acre of land $1,000 a month

4 different colors of mulch

1 loader

2 Dump trailers

f-250

1 driver

1 loader/cashier.

What do you think. Cost should be low to get started right?

I'd buy from your yard! I use lots of venders depending where i'm at during the week. Compost is also a fast selling item right now. (Not the nutri-green stuff) Very interested. Where are you trying to locate?

As much as I have put into it. Made it to Google first page for lawn care Virginia beach last month. Hopefully I will be in the same spot come spring or higher up.

You can't cover your overhead with just 4 types of mulch sorry you will need about 50k or more in inventory to turn over to generate enough profit to make it worth it. I operate 4 supply yards and it is very hard to make money.

I don't know about 50k, but you definitely need more variety: washed gravel, fill sand, topsoil, compost, base material, etc. Masonry sand is a popular item for many businesses. Most masons order a whole load and just leave half on the job when finished. You could cater to them as cost savings. Variety is key

Instead of the truck and 2 trailers why not an F700 with a dump or something like that. A good dumptruck is about the same price or cheaper than one dump trailer. Just an idea to save money.

How many yards of mulch a month do you sell at your slowest store?

Most people who run mulch yards in my area also sell compost, sand, etc and they are mainly run by tree companies who grind up their waste and sell it as a bi-product. So be sure to consider the cost of purchasing raw materials to turn into mulch. I would also try and cater to the home owner markets as much as possible by opening your yard to the public.

I bet it would cost more then you think. You need to have a variety plus all equipment. I think over 50k just to get started.

I run a garden center and can tell you that you will not be able to make it on just selling 4 types of mulch. The money just is not there. You will need decorative stone, hardscape products, pond supplies, maybe seed, fertilizer.
