View Full Version : Oil seal Damage (I think)

I have a 15 hp Kawasaki motor on my hustler walkbehind.I have a oil leak somewhere and its coming up from the bottom of the motor somewhere.The bottom half has a film on it.I ran over a rope last month and had to rip it out from the bottom and was wondering if It was possible that I might have hurt the seal where the clutch goes.Any help would be great.

That's likely what happened Al, Clean the under side up good then crank it up and watch the seal for leakage.....

In most cases no, Just drain the oil and carefully pop the old seal out with a screwdriver. But be careful not to gouge the crankshaft, I use a short piece of PVC pipe the same or just under the outside diameter as the seal to install the new one. Be careful that the crank doesn't grab the inner lip and fold it out on you while going in.

No need to split engine.

1. If you're going to attempt removal with engine installed and you can access the seal with a small bit and cordless drill, drill a small pilot hole close to the rim of the seal, then screw a hex headed sheet metal screw that is long enough to grab with a pair of pliers. I avoid this method when the engine is removed and in the inverted position so as to avoid dropping any small metal debris into the block.

2. If the engine is removed I usually try to use a sharp awl to create the pilot hole then proceed as in #1.

3. I have also been successful using a small, strong pick to penetrate the lip section of the seal and pull out. Care must be exercised to avoid scratching/gouging the crankshaft.

Rob, you're getting pretty consistent--it's a good thing we're not at the OK Corral.:nono:

You must be better with a screwdriver than I am. I've never felt confident using one in removing a seal.

It's all in how you hold yer mouth, I've never done um any different and never had a issue..... :weightlifter:

Naw, Rob, it took me but a minute but I made a run to the throne as well as to go check the amount of rain that dropped out of the sky. It's seems to be either feast or famine when it comes to rainfall. 5.25" in 14 hours of steady rain today and it's still coming down.

Since you're good at posting pictures, you might snap a picture the next time you perform a seal removal.:laugh:
