I have a bunch of commercial accounts with grass islands. They're a pain to mow with the zturn and even with my 48" walkbehind. Does anybody have any suggestions for something that's a little smaller but not a push mower? Who makes a decent 36" walkbehind that's not $3,000? I gotta figure something out for next season.

What's wrong with a push mower? I've always thought a push mower with caster front wheels would be perfect for small islands...

I imagine these are small islands. If they are too small to justify a Z then a 21 may be you best bet. I mow large islands with my 60 inch z and small with a 21, works fine.

Toro 40" , 36" will not catch the edges and will cause more trimming.

string trimmer - will save a ton of time if you can get away with it

They range from 3-4' wide bit they are all long stretches,(some up to 200' long), with trees planted every 20' or so. Walkbehinds fit perfect but the blades hit the curb every time you drop down to go around each tree. I figured maybe a smaller walkbehind wouldn't do that or maybe there was something else on the market that I haven't seen yet. I think a 21" would take just too long to make that many passes up and down.

Check out Sarlo mowers. I have a couple accounts that have lots of islands as well. They make a 30'' high-wheel mower with front caster wheels and self-propelled for a little over $1,500 delivered. I am going to purchase one this winter for next year. Great mower.

Too bad Toro stopped making this mower, it was a good design but not popular. Gravely makes the only 34 inch Z on the market I think.
