4000 sounds like a fair price. Its a tough mower but its like comparing apples to oranges considering its a front deck machine. I used to have a 616. I liked it for trimming. Watch out if you mow high grass. The driveshaft will get wrapped in grass. Also the primary pulley for the hydros wear on the inside of the sheave. You wont know it until it wont go up a hill. Most people assume the trans are bad but it is just the pulley, like 40 bucks. I would own one again for sure.

My dealer had a newer 618 and 500 hr 723K last year in the same price range, the 618 had a 48" deck and the 723 had a 52". He talked me out of the 618 due to a little grade and a few steep slopes on my place, he said he never cared for the 600 series and wouldn't push to sell them, but if someone wanted one he'd order one. He said they were built very well but the narrower frame makes for a rougher ride and not as stable on a slope. Like I said they were the same price so he probably would have made the same on either sale, I went with the 723.

I haven't seen this one in person yet but he says it has the 54 inch deck, my worry also is the 18 HP being undersized. Thanks for info

it would be a 52 inch deck and it does have enough power i have an old 720 with the 52 and the power is plentiful. The shaft drive transfers the torque of the engine better. Sounds like a good deal to me

Depending on the year of the machine. the 618 may or may not be a good deal. There were a lot of 618s sold with Kohler "TRIAD" engines and they have been a big problem. The cylinder sleeves drop and take out a conn. rod, wasting the engine. Grasshopper and Kohler both used to participate in a retro-fit program but Kohler has since stopped all support. The fix is to upgrade to a Command engine.......Jim:usflag:

The year model he is referring to has the command, the triad hasnt been used in years.

If the grass catcher is the dump from the seat type, that alone is worth about $1,500.00

Grasshopper introduced the 18HP Kohler Command in the 618 tractors in 2003.
From 1998 through 2002 the Kohler DOHC Triad was the standard power plant.
I hope this helps.....Jim :usflag:

Nice pics. They are both really clean looking mowers. Lift the seat on the 618 and the engine should be visable from that point. If you are lucky, a dealer has already converted it to the Command if it started life as the DOHC power plant......Jim :usflag:

The 618 has the Triad engine on it should I stay away from it are these engines doomed.

Yes, stay away from it. That engine will fail at very low hours. It is a shame, because otherwise it looks like a nice machine. There is NO way you want to own that machine, with the old style Kohler on it.
Grasshopper had, at one time, a conversion kit to convert it to a B&S engine. The engine and the kit were quite pricey, when all was said and done. I was a Grasshopper dealer until 2007, but can not remember if the kit was even still available then.
