I'm planning on buying a Scag TT with a 61" and have found two for 8,999 + tax each. One has the 35 hp Vanguard and the other has a 29 liquid cooled Kawasaki. The 29 Kawasaki is a demo and is supposed to look new. I'm not sure how many hours are on the 29. Can these be bought any cheaper and which one would be the best deal.

Thats a good deal on both. The 29 is always higher priced than the 35 Briggs. I have a 29 and it would be what I would buy again. They sip gas, but if they are out of war. they could cost more to repair. Mine has about 1200hrs and still runs like new. The 29 is around 11000 new. Now I am talking about the DFI model not the carb version.

35, too much horsepower is almost enough. you'll kick yourself the day when you have a bagger or long grass. the fuel consumption between the 2, probably not enough to want a smaller engine.

That big block has almost 10lb/ft over the Kawi.

That is a LOT.

If time is money, you'll save it by not having to slow down in thick grass when you pick the big block.

The main differences is gph. The 29 kawi gets 1gph. The 35 briggs get 1.8gph (I own one). The power is nice but if you mow weekly the 29 kawi is plenty.

I have 2 29 kawis and they dont get anywhere near 1 gph. I havent figured the exact but that 1.8 figure has got to be pretty close. But its also a very powerful motor. I brush hog with the things. That 35 ought to be earth shattering.

Side by side I demo'd a 29dfi and 35 briggs. Got 1gph and 1.8gph over 2 days time. I bought the briggs and still get that 1.8gph. I also own the 27HP carb'd kawi and that gets 1.3gph every time I have checked over the last 2000hrs. My next will be the 29dfi as I have the 35 briggs when need be.

thats why. Mine are the 29 carbs. They have alot more torque that the dfi.

I wouldnt even waste my time with the 29 horse. I own a 31 efi kohler and the 35 briggs, to me they are like two different mowers the 35 has so much more power. Its not even fun to run the 31 in tall wet grass after being on the 35 and for some reason my 35 is way faster than the 31. Just my two sense I love power and wouldnt want anything less than the 35.

I had the carbed version of the 29 DFI (27 LC'd Kawi) on my 2001 Lazer. OK engine overall, but I felt it lacked the power I needed, and it was only a 10cc pumped Lazer!

For the weight penalty and complexity of an added fluid to worry about, there simply isn't enough power or economy to justify this engine.

just seems like high horsepower is addictive!

I haven't seen the mower with the Kawasaki engine and found out today that it is actually a 27 and has over 100 hours on it. I think it's going to be the 35 Briggs.

Thats why it is the same price, the 29DFI would be more.

You guys have to be kidding me. I have a 23 hp 60" Lazer. I rarely find it to be under powered. If I put the bagger on it my speed is limited by the amount of grass and or leaves that can fit through the chute, not the power of the engine. I would get whichever one was likely to last longer and give better fuel economy.

I got a 25 Kohler on a 61 TC and a 29DFI on a 61 TT. The 29 beats the 25 3 to 1 in fuel usage. And I have run in to tall grass that sucks the 25 down and pulls the 29 some. But not very often. Everybody says you need hp to be productive. All I can say is they are mowing hayfields not yards. The 29 will be the pants off the 35 in fuel and may last longer also. But the 27 he is looking at probably wont be any better than the 35, the 35 is new so get it.
