I was given (2) 2 foot red maples in plant pots. They were removed from the ground yesterday and put into the pots. Should I transplant them now or wait until spring and leave them in the pots for the winter? Thanks.

You need to put those tree's in the ground. They have a much better chance of survival that way.

I cant speak for your climate, soil type, and hardy zone, but here in Texas in zone 7b now is the best time to plant trees and shrubs. It will give the maple time to spread its roots and adapt to the soil. I would recommend using a root stimulator and 3-4 inches of mulch, maybe more or less in your climate.
