A lot depends on your worker comp rates and such, but a general rule of thumb can be 1.35x their salary.

thanks i was wondering never hired anyone before and didn't know what it would really cost

If you need to hire and don't know how to go about it paychex is a great resource. They will do all worker comp, payroll, and taxes for you.

newtostone is about right with that figure of 1.35x their pay to cover taxes and insurances. That doesn't take into account for any benefits you may give the employee. Also you general liability insurance will more than likely go up once you go from solo to employees. if he is going to be driving company vehicles at all then your commercial auto policy may go up as well
