i don't do much landscaping, but i have done pruning. for some reason i did some hostas today and they would just pop right out of the ground as soon as i touched them. is this ok? usually i snip them at the bottom. i'm from michigan and its been cold here for a few weeks. these hostas felt like hard straw. i hope i ddin't fowl anything up. your thoughts please. thanks

they would just pop right out of the ground. When you say this what are you meaning? If roots with small bulbs came up, thats not good.

After the first hard frost, hosta will die back, and turn to mush. Just rake over them and pull out all the dead foliage, and next spring, they will come back. You could also use this time to dig up and divide if they are good sized.

I just cut them off at ground level when they start turning yellow.

You could pull the whole plant out, whip it against a wall, and throw them into the woods and the fricken' things would still find some way to root themselves and grow. I don't think you could kill them if you tried!! :D
