I have a kubota L3940 and looking at buying a bush hog. Should I go with a 6 ft or smaller and should I go with the lighter one with the smaller gear drive or pay the extra $400 and go with the one that has a bigger gear drive and thicker metal?

I had an L3710 and my 6' er was a little much for it. I doubt 2 horses make that big of a difference I stuck with my 5'er. You defenetly want to go with a heavier gauge metal and HD gear box. Spend the extra. It will be worth it. Bush Hog, Landpride, Woods all make a reliable Brush Hog.
all depends on what you are going to be cutting, but me, I would go with a five footer, when you get into really heavy stuff a six foot will be lacking horsepower.

I would put a landpride rcr 1860 on that tractor, you will be able to cut through just about anything!
