Were doing an estimate on 5 beds to mulch. Three beds need clean out and the other 2 just need mulch. We estimated 16 man hours and around 225 bags of black mulch. Granted these hours include everything from picking up material to finishing the job. We get mulch at $3.39 a bag also. Is $2500 sound right for this job just curious? Also just me and another guy doing it.

16 man hours total, or 16 hours for each man to work (32 man hours)?

If 16 hours total, then, yes $2500 is a good profit.

I charge double the cost of the mulch plus the hours it takes to weed. Unless you have an awful lot of weeds to clean up your price sounds high to me.

Are these beds in terrible shape? Is there overgrown trees in the beds? Do some of them have to be cut out? Exactly how many yards are you estimating for?

I am confused...are you just guessing? Don't you have an hourly rate? At the original $2500 you were about $100/hour. That's going to be hard to get depending on the client.

How many yards of mulch are you putting down?

The customer is wanting black hardwood mulch and all the places around here only carry black in bags not yards. We charge $60 a man hour so materials came to be around $765 plus the 16 total hours comes to around $1500

Bear, that is why I said earlier to double the price of the mulch which covers the purchase and installation and add the labor for additional work such as weeding, pruning and edging.

That should be an easy one to figure, measure for the area of the beds that will give your mulch cost, take that # x2 then just take your labor cost and add it to it, wahlah! Beds and yards should be the easiest to figure, you just gotta know the sq/ft and the time it takes to cut that amount of sq/ft, with a lil experience you should be able to eyeball most yards or easily measure and figure it out.

Around here in Northern Illinois we charge $15/yard at 2 inches thick. This works out pretty well for us.
