I'm in the market for a new backpack blower and as my normal M.O. I do a little research before I buy.......as well as calling around a bit. I figured anyone in the market for a blower could use this information.
I know the prices will vary depending where you live so just use this info as reference.

Numbers don't lie but they sure don't tell the whole story. Listen to what other say and get as many recommendations as possible.

I didn't know the 7001 Redmax was that much stronger in numbers than the 7000.
Boy am I glad I have a 7001. :)

DISCLAIMER- I DO NOT own one, but a dealer I stoped by, that sells echo and shindy was telling me that the echo is absolutly CRANKED to get numbers that high, while most others have a little higher they can go, the echo 650 cant possibly go higher. This means reduced reliability of course if it is true. He also told me that echo refuses to test against the shindy's and the redmax's in their PVC ball test. I DONT KNOW IF HE WAS TELLING THE TRUTH< BUT THIS IS WHAT HE SAID, so take it with a grain of salt. Just wanted to throw that in. I own a pb600, and thought it was the best thing going until I bought a w/b blower!

We have a Echo 650, a Redmax 7000, Redmax 7001, and a Stihl (not sure its size)
The 7001 is the best of the bunch...hands down.

When I started shopping for a B/P blower I too started focusing on the "numbers" ,,,, bah! numbers mean squat. I only had 3 options locally, Echo, Stihl, Husqvarna. Stihl had good numbers, but when I compared the BR420 magnum against the Husky 165, the Husky, although it's "numbers" were lower, blew the Stihl's doors off. It really suprised me,but I guess the manufacturers can measure the air flow in their own ways to arrive at their specs. Plus it was more comfortable,,big plus.
Lesson is : As with mowers,it's wise to demo! :)

Rod? How much did you pay for the redmax 7001. Is there much of a differance from the echo pb-650.

I paid $460 for the Redmax 7001.
There is a difference from the Echo 650...it uses probably twice as much fuel and has a little more power to go along with it.

I saw the pb650 go up against probably any blower you can imagine at the spring open house. As a matter of fact, the Echo distributor brought their own 7000 to compare. The 650 blew the ball out of the tube and then some. Customers were bringing their own blowers up to try, it became sort of a competition. One of the guys from the shop brought out a shindaiwa and lost. Then we heard him inside the shop about 15 feet away tuning it! That's what happens when u get cocky I guess! A demo under similar circumstances is the only way to go. What we need to do is come up with our own test that's transportable from dealer to dealer. We need our own benchmark. How about pushing a brick down the sidewalk?
