i've got an older turf tracer with lots of hours, hydros work perfect except for a little whine when cold. i changed the hydro oil and filter and while i was at it i checked the play on the wheel bearings and both sides seem to be a little loose. i figured they were like a wheel bearing on a car and i went to try to tighten them up and noticed they have quite a bit of torque on them so i left it the way it is for now.

i cant find any info on this in a search. is a little play ok and i should just leave them alone?

Ehhh. their not "wheel brgs". That's the hub retaining nut. The looseness you feel is wear on the wheel motor's output shaft. My advice would be to leave them alone.
Short of a replacement, there is nothing that can be done.

i guess its to be expected with high hours. is this something that will cause a failure?

The high pressure seal will start to leak, then the dust seal. Wheel motors sometime last the life of the unit due to the weight. But you can always have a failure. When the fail mechanically, they always take the pump. I only say that because you seem to be looking for something to worry about. I hope it helps. :)

i get pretty picky about the condition of my stuff haha.

i've done some searches on hydros and it seems everyone is asking about leaks-all the way up to full blown failure, nobodys concerned with excess play.

Make no mistake. The play is wear. But there's not alot that can be done. Just watch for leaks around the dust seal. When they start leaking, then start thinking about replacement.
