Help on anti-blow out baffle

I'd like to see some pics or read a very good decription of these add-on baffles. I'm going to fabricate my own over the holidays. I'd like to have some solid info to start with so I don't have to spend to much time dealing with trial and error testing.

I don't use one yet but have heard that using the rubber garden bed edging works well. Try it first with duct tape, which may be tough this time of year, so that you get the height right. A difference of a little bit can mean either success or a leaf plow from what I have read.

We use stuff similar to indoor/outdoor carpeting (I got a roll of the material years ago to line the inside of the truck cabs with). We cut it to fit the front and/or back of the deck, and attach it with bolts and washers. Many times it will last as long as three seasons, and it is very easy to replace.

It is very flexible (no "leaf plow" effect), but does the job.

That was my idea. I posted it a while back. :D
I just haven't had the time to stop and install mine yet. I'm just looking for tips to save some time getting it right.

As for the carpet, my blades are very close to the front edge of the deck. I'd be afraid it would get up into the blades. I have seen some deck designs I believe that would work well on though. This issue is why I chose stiff plastic bed edging.


Also I am wondering, do baffle kits do more than just hang down farther? Isn't there a lip on some of them? Seems I have seen some mulch kits with anti-blow out baffles designed that way. I can't remember for sure though.

Well, your rubber bed edging post made enough sense to me to stick in my head for when I try this. ;)

I run a Honda Commercial Hydro WB 48" that I picked up for a steal late this season. I have always "mulched" as much as possible but doing it via side discharge with Gators and a pass or two. I welded a plate that slips into the bag fittings to block the discharge as an experiment and it worked fine for mulching grass as these Honda decks have very nice baffles but I did suffer some blowout with the leaves in the front after they started to fall. Have yet to experiment with blade height as they are even with the bottom of the deck edge right now and suspect if I get them up a bit it will help. Hope you find a solution that you are happy with.

If you can view that picture!! I used a piece of aluminun flashing 36" by 5" to make the anti-blowout baffle for my toro 36" wb with a mulch kit installed. It works excellent!!! Leaves just disapear

Here's the protoype I made last year. The one that I use goes all the way across the front of the mower and is under the caster brackets.

So a lip style baffle would be beneficial. That was my first thought. I may play around with it some tomorrow and see what I come up with. I have 20 ft of material to work with. So I would hope I can find something that works. I'm going to use as many existing bolts as possible to attach it. I'm hoping I don't have to go boring holes all in the deck.

This gives you an idea how my deck runs under the mower. Between the blades runing too low and the design, I was chasing a lot of leaves that were blow away by the left blade before the right blade got there.

Here is the finished product after adding the cheap landscape edging as a baffle. I just turned the smooth round edge down and used existing bolts to attach it. So the baffle starts at the left rear guage wheel bracket, wraps around the left side, across the front and ends at the farthest point to the right. I hope it works ok since I didn't just add it to the front only.
