I planted 3 blue spruce two years ago for a customer. The first one started dying in the middle of the summer last year. Now the other two are loosing needles. There was another one in the customer back yard that has been there for years started to drop needles recently.

Any thoughts? When i asked the nursery last summer they said to much water from the gutters over flowing. But that doesn't explain why the one in the back yard is dying also. I have to remove the dead one but don't want to replace it if it's going to die like the others.

Ditto.

That and check the trunks for a white residue running down the trunk. I know around here there is a disease with that symptom that is slowly killing Blue Spruces around our area.

Otherwise, the soil is either too wet, or too dry and they suffered.

What the heck were you doing putting blue spruces that close to a house also? Even the dwarf variety gets up to 20ft or so.

Did the die back start at the bottom?

Im guessing....and only a guess is Rhizosphaera. Its a fungal infection that tends to attack immature blue spruce...

Don't guess at this. You live in NJ, this is probably free.

I agree. Fairly common cause of needle cast. Look it up- a number of common antifungals can treat it.

I have never seen a spruce succumb to any disease, regardless of where it came from. But I've seen hundreds of bad plantings that caused the to die.
The growth habit of spruce is the spreading horizontal roots just under the surface of the ground. Planted too deep and you got problems...
B&B is even worse problem...

No pictures of the crown at the base of the tree, so the most likely problem wasn't even considered... :(

Was it a B&B planting?

There is a fee. But the benefit of making a correct diagnosis far out weighs the cost.

It happens quite frequently in NJ. So does improper planting. :)
