View Full Version : A new hill pic for those that poked fun at me before

I posted a blurry pic in another thread. A house in the background was distorted. So I became the butt end of a joke. I guess some people were making me out to be a lair.
I have no reason to lie about such a thing. So I decided to snap a few shots while I was out today. I got some decident ones this time I think.
Notice the electric pole in the upper left hand corner I used to line up the camera with.
Keth, could you please do that thing you did to the other pic so I'll know the grade of this bank? I thank you in advance for your time doing it!
As for the others of you, and you know who you are,

Flex-Deck, surely that has got to be more than 35 degrees right??? Usually solo's have to get OFF to take a picture which would explain the lack of a pilot. I do steeper stuff. But I'd be afraid to dismount to take a picture.
I agree that the taller they are the more pucker factor is involved.
I have some of those too. They really suck. Hills and banks like these are good spots for landscape installation as far as I'm conserned.

Glad I don't have any of those.
BTW: it wasn't the house that made the other photo untrue. It was the horizon (It was wayyyy crooked in your favor). We have a point of reference here that is true.

Wow Envy that is steep, if it weren't for the sides of your bottom tires sitting on the road I'll bet it would slid down hill.

I estimate a shade over 45%. I just held a piece of paper (straight edge) from corner to corner across the computer screen to get a 45 and the mower is at a slightly steeper angle then that. I'm sure the flat area at the top helps hold the tractor too, but that is impressive for a tractor.

jeffyr,
Check this pic. The horizon is way against my favor wouldn't you say? I live and work in the foothills and mountains. There aren't very many flat horizons around here. Like I said before, the tree line at the horizon was slated because the trees themselves are standing on a slope.
Point,
No troubles sliding as long as conditions are reasonable. Look at where the tires are in relation to the road here. In this image and the other there is a ditch that goes below the roadline. It's just filled with leaves.

Ya that looks really cute but also stupid.
I know a woman who was on her dad's riding mower at age 15 and flipped it doing exactly that.
She was taken to the hospital with her leg dangling by the skin.
18 years later and 50 surgeries later, she still has side effects from pain meds, not to mention her knee is still FUBAR.
Keep the shiny side up.
;) and for God's sake be careful!

Well, really nothing. I was just trying to share a little about my area, some about my properties and to give an insite as to why I don't cut with a ZTR. That's all.
I know some of the places I ride are crazy to do. But during the dry year we have had, I haven't used the 21" even once. What I can't ride I trim and I wouildn't use a 21" there anyways. Too rough or steep.
Now don't get me wrong! I want a ZTR or WB on the trailer!
What I really need is a horse trailer and a load of goats :D

I was talking about this image when I refered to the "other" photo. I said I agree that the picture above looks more accurate since you included a point of reference. You included a point of reference in the last photo too, although you won't admit it.

I vacation on the Outer Banks and ride into Greenville occasionally. In the whole time I've been there I've only seen 2 "pro" rigs and about 50 lawn tractors in the back of pickups. I don't think that it's a matter of preference but more a matter of demographics. There is simply more disposeable income to be spent on higher priced lawn care in certain parts of the country. If you can afford to give your lawn guy more money than he can afford to buy better equipment. It's like buying a car there. There are used car outlets on every corner but you need to go to the big city to buy a new car.

John & Richard,
No ot everyone uses lawn tractors here in NC. It's dependent on where you are at here really. In some areas, the point Richard made applies. Income level.
But around my county here in the NW part of the state ( it's caldwell county Tony) it seems to be more terrain oriented. Here the big LCO's run 4x4 front mowers & sometimes sub compact tractors. John Deere, Kubota, New Holland front mowers and Kubota, Ford or Massey Ferguson tractors. The rest of us use John Deere lawn tractors mostly.
This certainly is NOT a high income area at ll. But there is good money to be had here still.
Now if you cross the river into the next county where the terrain is flater, there are a lot more ZTR's out and about. When I traveled about 200 miles east to Raleigh NC, I didn't even see one LT on a trailer. Everyone had ZTR's WB's, standers ect...

Couldn't agree more!
And I vacation there too, and NOTICE the SAME thing! Even out on the banks. Even what I'd call pro's are using JD tractors, TORO tractors, etc. Heck its all crabgrass down there anyways. Crabgrass and SAND!
But anyway, the Carolina's are filled with LCO's with Tractors.

Here is Envys pic with lines drawn - Darryl, if your computer screen is like most, it is wider than it is tall, so the angle is not 45 corner to corner - more like 35. I do not have a protractor here at home, but if anyone does, put it on these lines and see how close to 35 degrees the angle ishttp://Envys

Hi Gang.
No pucker factor involved, no place to roll too. I will make some pic's of what I use to cut at my dad's when I was a kid "very dumb) but on a 32" Husky hanging way out over the side surfer style :D
My Dad has rolled two riding mowers on his bank, Lucky he is still alive to tell about it, both times were a trip the local Emergency Room.
Now it's only a 21" push or drag mower and Weed Eater...
Later.

Why in god's name don't you purchase an eXmark 60" TTHP WB & be done with it.
Your area is not condusive to ZTR's & lawn tractors are for homeowners.

You need to be very careful I don't think that the angle you are mowing at fits the manufacturers specifications.
If you have an accident will your insurer pay you if they realiise you are using your mower contary to the manufacturers advice!
thanks

Well I would if I could but I can't! That's because the biggest TTHP is 52"!!!
Just pickin' on ya! :D :D :D
I know you mean the 60" Turf Tracer and I thank you for the recomendation! I'd have to take off the sulky and walk here though right? Not a problem if I do. The 60" Lazer Z is also on my maybe list because of the width of the machine for stability. Is that why you recomend the 60"???
Thanks again

Believe me, I see your point. It's dangerous for sure. But I am comfortable with it now and I know the limitations. But I have to be extremely careful in replacing it. Otherwise I could end up hurt badly trying to go places I used to go.
As for the manufacturers advise, if we all followed that to the letter, most of us would never get up the trailer ramp on Monday morning. Murray's cut off is 15 degrees plus up and down only on slopes.

I had a gal at a pizza shop spot my mower in the truck and ask me the inevitable question, "How much do you charge to mow a lawn?" I was tired, and told her the truth... "It depends on the size of the lawn, how many obstacles, and the pucker factor." We have a lot of hills here in East Tennessee.
Funny, she never asked me the other two most-asked questions, how many lawns do you mow, how much do you make?

Envy,
Stop looking at ZTR's & purchase a 60" Tracer (you got my mistake about the HP!)
I guarantee this will be a better purchase for you than any ZTR on the type of terrain you are worrking (walk or ride!)
& this is simply the best WB mower on the planet!
Just do it Envy, after 2 weeks on the Tracer you will wonder how you ever used that silly Lawn tractor & a ZTR will limit you if the terrain I see in your pics is any indication.

Flex-Deck,
I figured out how to draw some lines myself. :)
I'm not trying to give ya a hard time, so don't get all mad. But I think I did a little better job than you. It's just a bit more than 35 degrees I think. Lawn tractors also have pivoting fron axles. So I used the body since it always stays in line with whatever plane the fixed rear end is on.
Enjoy!!!

envy, do a search for guys who use these mowers. There are a few on here. There are very few hills that they will not do SAFELY. I know you can do really steep hills with almost any mower but will it be safe. I am looking for one of these for some hilly property we do.

I mow 'em with a Scag SWZ, a hydro WB. If it gets too steep, I just hop off the Velke. I also have an Exmark, belt drive. I don't use it any more since I got the Scag, but it does stick to the hills better than the Scag, I think. For real steep stuff, Gravely two-wheel tractor. Actually, it's got dual wheels, so it's a four wheel WB with a 16 Kohler. It'll climb hills that goats are skeered to climb.

Envy, the 430 Max would work for you. 4 wheel drive, front mount, quick attach and lots of attachments for it. Where I live most chicken farmers have them, they use them for everything from cutting lawn to cleaning out barns and everything in between. take a look at the blower they have for it that thing will really blow leaves.

Here they are a little less than a Walker for the 430 and the 60" deck.
I plan on buying a used one, most golf courses here use them with reel mowers. I have found a few with reels that were real cheap, buy it then throw away the reels and buy a used outfront deck for it. You can also put duals on all the way around for even more flotation that's what the golf courses do. With duals they can mow even when the grass and soil is soaking wet and barely leave a mark.
