OK guys, I need your opinion on this Toro Grandstand and if you think this is a good price for it or not. It is a 2009 48" Grandstand 23 hp Kawasaki with 517 hours. It comes with bagger, new mulch kit, and extra blades. He said all updates have been done last fall.

Input appreciated!

I have a 52" with a 23 hp Kaw. If I didn't need it for mowing steep hills and leaf removal, I would say it has waaay more hp than what it needs. Depending on what your needs are, I might try to find something with less hp because you will lose any savings you get on buying a used mower by using more fuel than needed for the size deck as compared to a newer or new machine with a more efficient hp to deck size ratio. Something ideal would probably be in the 17-20hp range for a 48" deck IMO. If you think you need that much hp though I think it is a decent price:)

Thanks for the reply guys!

I have heard the 2009 Grandstands have some problems, but he said all updates have been done. What should I look for other that the obvious stuff? This may be a stupid question, but does this machine strip good? I am used to Exmark mowers, so I am guessing they are probably pretty close in cut quality?

I am assuming that you meant "stripe" as in lines in the grass insteaad of "strip" as in strip the machine for parts and yes the grandstands do stripe as well as the exmarks. The do offer a stripe kit if you want them even more defined but I don't think it is needed. My grandstands are 2010 and 2011 but the dealer has still had to do some updates on both of these but they were minor.

I have a 2009 48" Grandstand, there is no way I sell it for $2800. As long as its mechanically sound thats a great price. Why is he selling ? it's a great mower.

First question would be to ask him why he is getting rid of it. Then try to fenagle from him where he got his repairs done. Call up and give the info and say it's for your books and find out what he's had repaired on it. If he's mistreated it and it's needed repair and THAT'S why he's getting rid of it... NOOOOO WAY.

Yeah, whenever I go look at a mower first thing I always ask is why are they getting rid of it? You can also usually tell from the looks of it if they have taking care of it or not.

as long as the recalls were done on the 2009 they are fine. i have 500 hours and not one problem.
and for 2800 as long as the motor and hydros are fine get it. any fix would be minor and cheaper to fix for that price and you would still be ahead

Well bad news, I went and looked at it tonight and it has a crack in the frame! Along with some other problems I noticed.

The search continues.

Did you let the guy know at least nicely about it? Like, why are you selling this without telling anyone about it. It must have fallen off a truck if it cracked the frame.

Usually if it seems to good to be true its either stolen or broken. Good eye! Di he come right out and say it was crack or did you have to notice on your own?

Grandstand frames are lifetime warrantee...I had a small hairline crack in my 60" frame and the dealer fixed it at no charge.

mine didn't fall of a truck by the way:).....I go over alot of curbs at my accounts and don't always take the time to go up or down really slow...carcked probably because of my carelessness but it is fixed and was fixed well with an update.

He said the mower got stuck in mudd and had to pull it out with his expedition and cracked the frame.

Usually if it seems to good to be true its either stolen, broken or abused. Good eye! Di he come right out and say it was crack or did you have to notice on your own?

He said it had a crack right as I noticed it.

It had other problems besides the crack in frame. Kill switch was not working right, grass catcher was shot, (held together by zip ties) he said mower would pull to one side and wouldn't always go straight, one of the rear tires has a slow leak, paint is faded, most of the decals are missing, engine oil was pitch black. Also, he said sometimes he would have to start it with jumper cables. Probably needs a new solenoid.
