View Full Version : What engine oil??

Hello everyone. I know I am getting the itch for spring bad here in pa. Quick question. I have been running 10w 30 oil in my two exmarks. One has a kohler sp 27 hp and the other a kawi kai 28 hp. Someone said to run 10w 30 in the kohler and sae 30 in the kawi. Is this right or is 10w 30 ok in both? They both have about 1800 hours and I would like to make them last as long as I can. Thanks for all the help.
My KAW KAI manual says that multi-viscosity oils will result in oil consumption. However, when it's cold outside (early-Spring/late-Fall) it makes sense to have a multi-viscosity (thinner when cold) oil just to ease the burden at cold start.
From my years of reading around here, here's my chosen truth:
I run Mobil 1 15w/50 synthetic. It offers a less viscous oil when cold...and the protection of a synthetic oil meaning less oil degradation/breakdown in extreme conditions. Yes, my KAIs need a little bit of occasional topping off between oil/filter changes every 75 hours.

low levels of zppp mandated by the epa have made us switch to diesel grade 10-30 only

I run 0w30 mobile one in my Kawasaki mowers.

Probably the best oil off the shelf.for high.ZDDP.levels is Mobil 1 motorcycle oil in both 10w40 and 20w-50.
Mobil 1 15w-50. This used to have.the highest zddp level of auto grade oils...not sure in recent years. Check on bobistheoilguy.com for latest Zddp levels.
Mobil 1 high mileage 10w-40
Castrol Syntec 0w-30 SL rating I use this in 4 stroke snow.throwers. closer to a 35 weight oil.
In non synthetic oil I have used diesel rated 15w-40. Again CJ rated oil has dropped zddp levels compared to CI older oils.
