View Full Version : Engine swap, no pto, any ideas?

I just finished the engine swap tonight on my ferris walk behind. Brand new vanguard 20hp recoil. Got everything put back together and the pto is dead. Worked fine before the swap. Im pretty sure i can hear it spinning inside there, no loud click when i pull the switch. I checked all electrical connections, belt tension, check plug on the pto, finally took everything off the crankshaft and reinstalled. Still nothing. Im going to pull the pto off again, what do i need to look for? What readings should i be looking for on the pto plug from my meter? Any ideas what to look for on the pto mechanism itself? Any help would be appreciated....the grass is growing!! :wall

Does the Vanguard engine have a charging system made to run an electric clutch without a battery? Most do not...and its a bit of a PITA to figure out which one it is when talking to Briggs.

I think u hit the nail on the head, I just reviewed the email I recieved regarding the engine swap from my dealer, there were 2 service notes attached. Basically telling me to remove the rewind assembly, flywheel, andd alternator from the old engine to the new. That is obviously the problem. I feel like a goof for forgetting that, but your post reminded me. Another hour or two and I should b good to go. That new 20hp sounds nice and for now, is much easier to pull start than the old engine.

Turns out all i needed to swap over was the rectifier, or regulator or whatever it is called, that small black box w/ the 2 wires, (usually red and yellow on the briggs engines) and now it works like a charm.
