View Full Version : removing existing lawn
I am going to replace an existing lawn.its very thin, and weedy.the project area has many obstaciles so a large machine can not be used.
If you had to pick a single tool to use to remove the lawn, what would you use?
herbicides can not be used per customers request.

A sod cutter should do the trick. Its smaller and should fit in tight places

Thin and weedy? So kill the weeds. And why is it thin?Dogs? Shade? Lack of water?
Shade is the most common cause of thin grass. Correct the shade problem first or the new grass will die out in 6 months again. A sod cutter is good unless the obstacles and roots prevent it s effective use. Cutting out sod by hand is tough work--and slow.
You could just resod--but I am not sure if laying sod on top of old grass is advisable, even if it is short cut. Easy and it looks great--take the money and run. No guarantee.
Perhaps you could cover the old grass with black plastic for two weeks to kill present grass. Then resod. Or perhaps burn the old grass with a torch--resod.
Anybody...can sod be laid over existing grass? What happens? If Roundup first, then what?
