View Full Version : Grass coming thru Ornamentals

Hi, wondering if there is anyway I can control the grass that seems to be growing thru my ornamental grasses. The first 2 pictures are of the grasses being overtaken, the third is right beside the two and normal. Any ideas?

Bermuda and Zoysia is going to get in beds without good edging. Fact of life and even then you will have troubles. Pull it.

some of them are so overtaken, so it might be easier to just replace?
and edged down a good 3-4 inches/re-mulch every spring on this bed..

Bermuda and Zoysia run deep. Likely need twice that underground.

If you keep pulling it it might give up.

I would suggest a shore or parsoni juniper for a ground cover. At least than if either type of turf type returns you can control with Round-up and not worry about the ground cover dieing as well.

Hand pull before it gets out of hand.

We used a pre-emergent granular herbicide Before it was banned here. We would deep edge the lawn seperating the rhizomes that were growing into the garden. Pull out the roots that we could, and sprinkle "dichlobenil" aka Casaron onto the garden in the problem area, and water it in. Or one could carefully apply a glyphosate once the errant lawn is seperated from the mother plants by deep edging. You'd still end up removing the dead grass clump at a later date.

Grasses are tough to erradicate some-times, because you can't pull out all of the roots.

I use a BASF product called "Segment". You can spray it over the top of most Ornamental trees and shrubs without worry. It works really well.

We sometimes use a sponge soaked with round-up (diluted) and dab it on to the offending weeds. Very effective.

Careful treating grass with grass killer. hand pulling is in order.
