www.michiganturfgrass.org is a good source for general info in Michigan. Site undergoing a major upgrade at this time, so some areas are under construction. Membership in Michigan Turfgrass Foundation would get you direct invitation to most state events.

Depending on where you are in Michigan, there is a show in Toronto, Ontario from January 15-17.

I work full time as well and I'm 1000 miles away. I'm planning on taking a vacation day to fly down to attend the trade show component. There are some really inexpensive airfares and same day return flights that make this worthwhile.
