View Full Version : 2001 F-150 turn signals cutting in and out

Like the title says, the turn signals on my truck will work normally anywhere from 5-60 seconds and then it sticks. The arrow light on the dash stays on and the light itself stays on, it just sticks and stops flashing. Sounds like a bad relay somewhere. Anyone experience this before? Can you point me in the right direction for a fix? It works ok for changing lanes in normal traffic and stuff but I'm not able to use my hazards and if fighting traffic it can be troublesome. Thanks guys.

If you're towing use a heavy duty flasher. Get an electronic one if you can. Check all bulb sockets/plug in connectors for corrosion.

Dig a little more digging online and this seems to be the consensus. Unfortunately, it also seems that they moved the flasher several times in this model F-150 over the years. In my '01 it's not in either fuse box, no round thing in sight. Looks like I have to remove the trim piece under the steering column and do some digging. I'll let you know what I find and hopefully that takes care of it.

If you have the owners manual it should tell you were it is. They are not always round some of the aftermarket ones are square, they look like a relay.

Looking in the owners manual and verifying in the inside fuse box, there are 5 relay spots, only 4 of them used. None of them have to do with the flashers. Everything else in there is a small fuse. I couldn't find anywhere else in the manual that referenced where it would be, but it sounds/feels like its behind that trim piece under the steering column, kind of close to the cigarette lighter. Thinking I'll pick up a new flasher first so I'm not taking this thing apart more times than I have to.

found this:

You have a relay box on the passenger side of the steering column with 2 relay in it. The flasher relay is one of them, to replace it, you just remove it an install the new one. Remove the panel under the steering column and look to the right.

I picked up the flasher today, should have time to replace it tomorrow, hopefully that takes care of it. I'll update after I test it. Thanks!

Got it changed out. Once I knew where I was going the whole thing took just under an hour from start to finish. They put it in a fairly inconvenient location haha. Had a time getting my hands in there. I let it run for about a half an hour and it never cut out so I think that fixed it. Thanks guys! I knew lawnsite was for more than just gas vs. diesel and brand loyalty squabbles lol.

Hmm...one of my headlights is out tonight now. I don't think I did that today with my digging around lol...
