Just curious.How are they still die off? Does the fungus just stay in the air some how?

Blight thrives in hot humid weather. Typicaly if there is a wet august it can wipe out many a garden and beyond.

It's soil-borne mostly, though this article say's the pathogen live's on the bark of other tree's. I can go out on my property in spring and show you a bunch of live chestnut sapling's that will be dead by fall. I've only seen a couple of mature chestnut's, i'd like to see a forest, i didn't realize how useful that wood was. Did you know they made railroad tie's and telegraph pole's out of that stuff, i didn't.
