I will be buying a new mower after the first of the year and need some input on the different options I've found. A local Hustler dealer has some 2012 X-One demo units in the $7,000-$8,000 price range, along with some former rental units that they've marked down to sell. The units are $2,000-$2,500 cheaper than what they normally sell them for brand new. The warranty begins on the date of purchase, so regaurdless of the hours it will still be a new machine when I buy it.
I have also looked at the Big Dog mowers. Everything I have found implies that they are basically the older style Hustlers painted red. I've also considered the Cub Cadet Tank. I'm only spending $7,000-$8,000 and trying to get the most bang for my buck. I'm looking for a 60" with no less than a 26hp engine.

I would check with Hustler on those rental units. I doubt they have any warranty. Demo units yes have the same warranty as new...but rental I kinda doubt.

Today demo 2013 Big Dog X Diablo with 60 inch deck and 27hp Kawasaki motor. First off I am a Scag mower all the way , so I thought. The dealer were I live started sell them. They said take one and try it. Have a football / scoocer field that I take care of and it was needing to be mowed. IT was overseed with rye grass that is thick. MY Scag Turf Tiger cuts it good, but the Big Dog did a better job cutting it. Something that I like was how fast it can move, smooth hydro, the cut was very good nice job spreading the clipping. Thing that I did not like was the seat seem short but was ok, deck heights are in 1/2 inch mark I like 1/4 inch marks. It seem to be built just like the hustler. The decks are the big difference I can see. How well it will last is the big question. Here is some vidoe you can look at. http://youtu.be/ZJTBnT1r08U / http://youtu.be/TpWic-yRwUU. Hope this may help.

I like brands but I also am one that kicks wheels. I would say test mow test mow test mow. You will find the one that works best for you. The dealer set up is the key for out of the box performance. If your dealer doesn't know crap and just puts the mower together then any strait out of the box mower will SUCK. If you have a dealer that knows how to make sure the deck is level, towed, right blades for the area, adjusts hydros, play in sticks, adjusts the rpm of the engine and so on, any mower can cut. Biggest thing is to figure out what you want to do with the mower, bag, side discharge, mulch. That makes a huge difference when you are talking the different deck styles.

good luck.

I know big dog resale value is not near as good as a hustler since your practically buying old pumps, deck, frame etc. etc.

If you flip the deck height pin you get the 1/4 inch increments.
