This really urkes me, you buy a set of "New" blades and check them for Balance and there out of balance. Does anyone check their blades before installation ?? I feel they should be ready when you purchase them..

I always check them. I've had numerous blades that were way out of balance when I bought them.

It does suck and if you run them out of balance we all know what happens so you would think that they would come already balanced.

I've bought some that were actually very slightly bent before. I would have never known without my MagnaMatic balancer. The dealer didn't believe me. I had to take in my MagnaMatic because I have better sharpening/balancing equip. than he does.

Ive seldom purchased new blades that were in balance, I always sharpen them and balance them anyway, so no big deal to me........Marks Mowing Service............Save them spindles)

I lost my balancer. Is there a way I can balance them w/o buying the magnamatic? (not enough funds left)
I bought the one from home cheapo and it worked pretty good till lost.
Check balance right after sharping and before installing a new set, always. More times than not the new set is out of balance.

I just bought a new set 2 day. Is there a way I can check them on the wall with a nail?

Ive always sharpened new blades to clean the paint off the cutting surface any way. As far as not being balanced when new I would think even a small thick spot in the paint would knock the balance off quite a bit .

Yes new blades always get sharpened and balanced before using.

I too have thought about the paint theory,(Lawn Specialties)
I would think there on an assy. line and they should be the same. Probably run by computers.. Actually I just purchased a set and Finally one was perfect !! I use a Magna-Matic balancer and very happy with it..
(lawncare3); About a nail in the wall trick ?? If their real off balance it could help, probably better than not trying. The balancers you get from H.D. the cone looking thing I take is what you're talking about might be better than the nail trick ?? I have tried both ways and think the cone is better.. Since I've had the Magna-Matic no other way......... If you get the opportunity to try one then you'll start saving $$$ to purchase one..
I don't sharpen New blades, I'll check the balance and take off metal behind the back side of the lift area till I get it right.. I just have a bench grinder, but hope to get a Magna-Matic sharpener in the future.. Need to save up some $$$............
Thanks for the spell check,
Lou

If ballance is important to you, Always check new blades.
LC3 When I had just one mower I found a bearing that just fit in the blade hole(had to grind outside a little) and mounted it to cabinet with bolt and spacers. It worked Just like the magna. But when you change hole sizes you need new bearing. You can either go to bearing supply or look around some scrap areas.. Skate bearing or muffler bearing or something like that.

Do you have a photo to share? I appreciate homemade tools, have made a few myself.
I have never checked new blades for balance.I know that Eric use to check them and would tell us that he'd find unbalanced new blades. I guess it's time to invest in a good blade balancer.

I realize the importance of a balanced blade ! That's why I've always checked them.. My main gripe was them not being balanced when brand new...

I have even bought blades that were sharpened just on one end. Had to take back and get another one.
All blades from rotory corp I have found to be perfectly balanced on a magna matic balancer. All other blades from a few different sources are always off.

Sure, just hang the blade with the nail through the center hole, and see if it balances. Sharpen some more the side that seems heavier. Check it again.
"Official" blade balancers are better (some are a LOT better), but the nail-in-wall does work.
The nail in the wall is about as good as not balancing them.:dizzy:

I agree about the nail in the wall trick, maybe if the blade is really un-balanced this trick could help.. But a Magna Matic is so much more precise...

Most all blades I get come from Rotory. I picked up 12 new blades in the fall. I always put every new blade on the magna before using. 2 were perfectly balanced and all the rest were extremely close. I give Rotory a thumbs up. Other brands I've got before have sucked on balance when new.

I always check new blades and put an edge on them. You will rarely find a new blade that is ready to go on the mower.

Well I learned something new again today. I didn't know to check the balance on new blades. Thanks for the tip. If I keep learning new information, in 30 or 40 years I will be a genius.
