I am looking for a good blade sharpener for my mowers, I cant stand cutting with not sharp blades. Sharping the blades by hand with a hand held grinder takes a lot of time that I could be during something else. Can anyone tell me of a blade sharpener on the market that can sharpen blades fast and easy. Thanks

Is there anything out there maybe a little cheaper that does the exact same thing? Price is a bit rediculous IMO

I don't have one yet, but I will. Magna-Matic... I have researched and can't find anything else to their standards, so I'm saving my $$$'s. I agree with being pricey. You could do just a bench grinder but that's not for me.. Good Luck..

I have 2 R.B.G's. A 1 horse, and a 3/4 horse. I also have a magna-matic balancer. I would not continue in landscaping if i did not have these items. They are worth their weight in gold.

'Fireball Jr' for a grinder and 'g-matic' for a balancer www.gpweb.net/fireball - great product - average price - highly satisfied.

I bought Brandlien's Fireball Jr. last year and am very satisfied. I will probably get MagnaMatic balancer soon.

You know their expensive when they're too afraid to display their own prices. Cost Analysis? LOL

Lots of choices, Nearly, Magna-Matic, RBG, Fireball to name few. I have a RBG 218. A blade grinder will make sharpening blades a snap. Also it will help keep the original bevel .Do a search on this topic and you will find a ton of info.

I really like the RBG. I've got the 3410 C with the blue ceramic wheel. You can grind blades very fast with out over heating the blade. Plenty of power also.

Is that an aluminum oxide cutting wheel on the mag?

Why couldn't you attach a wheel from Magna matic or RBG to a regular bench grinder? Then build a very simple platform for the blade to rest on? Seems like the cost would be under $100 and maybe an hour of time.

Strawbridge lawn, I use to think the same exact thing about thier prices.
I started with 3 blades to sharpen (2 from a 36"wb and 1 from a 21" push). I was paying $4 a blade to have them sharpened locally.
But then last year I bought a 3rd mower (a 52" with 3 blades). Now I had 6 blades to sharpen and on top of that the guy raised his price to $5 a blade. So I was paying $30 a week (I'm part time so I only needed them sharpened once a week).

That's $120 a month to have my blades sharpened. So a blade sharpener would pay for itself in about 6 months time. And now you have a sharpener for years to come.

I'll be buying one early this coming season!

That was a great breakdown on how fast one of these machines will pay for itself. I always start the day with sharp blades and at a minimum that is 20 blades a week, locally that equates to $120 for sharpen and balance at my local dealer per week.. Of course if I did not have a sharpener I would not be changing the blades daily. Sharp blades = great looking lawns (quickly).

Now you can't make a bade grinder. The magnamatic has an inudustrial style 1 horse motor on it that is made to be used all day every day for some one in the business of sharpening blades.

Hello All,

Thank you for the kind words.

I understand your concerns about price, but please take into consideration what the cost of blade service is if you have a local sharpener or shop do it. Most of all our customers have told us they sharpener has paid for itself in 1-2 seasons.

Magna-Matic is the ONLY sharpener manufacturer to offer:

60 second per blade sharpening time
30 day money back guarentee
Toll free life-time phone support (hey just call us to talk) 800.328.1110
Over 40 years of engineering experience
We hold more design patents than any other sharpener mfg

Our performance and quality is so evident and worth the $$ that if you do NOT think so, you may return it for a full refund, and you are only liable for the shipping costs.

We have been selling the MAG-9000 since 1987 and the MAG-8000 since 1999. We would not be in business if they came back - they almost NEVER come back.

We are high performance fanatics - if you cannot sharpen a blade in under 60 seconds you are spending too much $$ on labor. NOTE with well maintainted blades that 60 seconds can drop to 30 seconds.

Please review some of the differences between MAGNA-MATIC sharpeners - and other blade grinders.

Hello All,

We have recently done a cost analysis of the MAG-9000 (our lawn care pro model).

http://www.magna-matic.com/educate/cost_analy_9000.html

This cost analysis was calculated to help people understand the prices of MAGNA-MATIC high performance equipment. You will see that a high equipment cost of a VERY effective & efficient machine will reduce your costs.

The IMPORTANT thing that you should all review in your businesses is the SHARPENING COST PER BLADE.

Please check out this COST ANALYSIS that we have calculated to better understand why a sharpener that PERFORMS is better than a cheap sharpener that takes a lot of time.

Thank you for your time,

I have used RGB and a fireball wanna be for a few years...

I have a mag 9000, and it is 100x quicker and easier to use. Perfect razor edges are soooo easy it's stupid.

Price is a little high, but it is a perfect example of "you get what you pay for". Very true.

Hey, someone stole my question...haha! Thanks for the great feedback on the blade sharpeners, I was looking at the mag 9000 last night, the price seems comparable to others i've seen. I thought they were all $500+. I have been using a 4.5" angle grinder with a layered sanding disk (yes for steel) and get a razor sharp edge, it just takes too long and puts quite a cramp in the hand holding the thing to do 6 or 9 blades. I sharpen the blades from my ztr about 4 times a week average, sometimes more or less depending on growth.

I bit the bullet last year and bought the MAGNAMATIC sharpner and balancer both. I am extremely pleased with both. It really makes a difference to use a top quality product. I ordered 10am and Ups delivered 11 am next day 300+ mi. away. Thats service.
