That's really good.
The reason I leave a short message is because I am too cheap to pay for too much phone time.
I would just keep in mind that some people will be turned off by such a long greeting message. I know when I call someone and get a answer service, I don't want to hear a long spiel or push a bunch of numbers before I can leave my message. Just my .02 though.:)

I have a friend's girlfriend do our message. She has a very professional voice. Just a short & sweet message...no rhymes etc. I feel as though the girls voice gives the impression of a secretary...even though i do not have one.
I like the rhyming though...its unique!

You pay nothing if someone is calling you!!! Unless you have it forwarded to your cell phone. And, I don't think that is what you meant.

My cell phone is the only one I use. The people @ the phone company told me that I was charged if someone left me a message on MY phone.
BTW: I am in school but, I just have nothing to do.

Then you have a horrible plan. Not to mention...who really pays for your cell phone? Or is that all you have to pay for?

That explains what is wrong with our youth today. Why don't you go to the library and read?
Disclaimer: I try to take your responses with a grain of salt as you are only 15, but with as many inane responses you make, it is next to impossible. I just hope people aren't taking your advice too seriously.
P.S. Please remove that annoying banana.
I would say the phone message is too long and you would get alot of hang ups. Short and sweet and to the point gets a reponse from me when calling a vendor.

Maybe you should reread the original post. We are talking about the greeting that you put on your voicemail(the one that greets each caller before you get to leave your message), not about leaving messages on someones voicemail.

That's too much work for a fifteen year old.

This kid averages over 7 posts a day. This may be why he don't think before he replies. I also get charged for messages and it adds to my cell minutes, but if it is business replies then I don't mind when they are forwarded to my cell voice mail. Your greeting message on the cell "does not" add to your cell minutes. Unless, like glen said, you have a piss poor plan. I have never heard of such a thing.
Obviously, you are not a "real" business person if this is an expense that you feel is one that you can skimp on.

I also do have a piss poor plan $35 but, that's all I can afford in the winter. I was talking about MY message I leave before they leave a message. I really don't like calling somewhere and having to wait five (5) minutes to leave a message. I DID read his message and I personally wouldn't do that.

So be it. You spoke for yourself. Plus, where did I make a character generalization? I stated my image. Keep acting like you are and you too will fit my image. I guess school has got out for the day. This should be fun. LOL
The problem is that people come here asking and giving advice who don't even have a driver's license, don't own a real business, and act like they have a wealth of knowledge to share.
Sorry there yardboy, but I think there should now be an age requirement for membership. There is only one person here that I know of that was under aged and in high school and running a very lucrative and real business and gave sound advice on real business issues.

I will tell you, just like I told lawncare3, reread the post. Scraper didn't state a generalization of youths these days, he simply stated the image he has of youths now a days. I get that same image after reading some of the things that are posted on this site by the young members.

I have plenty of work ethic when it comes to lawncare, but when it come s to school work it's just not that much. I am the hardest worker when it comes to work that matters. I once did a spring cleanup with NO breaks and I got the job done in a professional manner. In fact I had to go to the hospital the next day for allergies related to that very same cleanup. That didn't stop me from going back to work the next day.

Thus my point. Eduacation is vital. Sure you like working outside...who doesn't, but when it comes time to converse with the client, don't you think it would be better that you could speak at their level and not 8th grade english? Getting back to the original topic...didn't you re-read it yet? LOL Admit it...you spoke before you even comprehended the issue. Pay attention in school...you may learn something that'll help you in the long run.
P.S. Welcome to the world of working for yourself. However, breaks are necessary and if you don't think you can afford to take a break, then you didn't price the job right. That's your own fault you had no breaks.

I can take breaks and afford it. I just wanted to get the job done. Hasen't there been a job where you just want to get it done (with quality of course) This was just one of those times.

What happened to the answering machine messege advice? Personally i dont really care for the rhyming messege. It sounds to mom and pop.
Our messege goes something like this :
You have reached the world headquarters of Lawnpro. Servicing all your grounds maintenance, and snow removal needs. Currently we are unable to answer your call, however if you leave your name, number, and a brief messege we will get back to you asap. Have a great day!
I agree with the poster who said something about his buddies girlfriend leaving the messege. I think a girl sounds more professional, and leaves the impression of being a bigger company, even if your solo.

I think a short message is the best...and a 'thanks for calling' at the end of the message is a good idea.

Scrapers "image" of youth is a character generalization. Think about it, his image of youth is as a group, when the entire generation's character can not be "labeled" as one thing, because it really is quite diversified beyond scope. There are more and more chess Grandmaster from our generation than any other, athletic records are being broken (Alan Webb), teenagers are opening up shop on the net and going public. Does this still suit your "image". I think not.
I don't care to toot my horn, but take me for instance: I'm 17
3.9GPA, top 5% of class, National Honor Society, Youth Council Leadership Member for Freedoms'Answer, 99AFQT on ASVAB, 1340SAT, Boy's State delegate, in addition to a plethora of computer/math compitition and english awards, Congressional Nomination for USAFA which I stand great chance of being accepted to. I have 12 hours of college credit, I'll have 25+ by the time I graduate, in addition to rigorous Honors classes and Spanish IV. I've ran Varsity track since my sophmore year in addition to running a lawn business after than and maintaining my school work. Imagine going to school for 7 hours, going to practice for 3 and running for 6+ miles, then exhausted going and trying to squeeze out a few yards before the sun goes down... Go home, homework.. Do it all over a gain until the weekend, which is the only time you can do your commercial accounts. The night is your only saving grace for homework.
As for my business. I bought a Gravely ProMaster 260z brand new for aprox $7,000. No my parents didn't buy that, I paid it off in 3 months in a loan secured with my name (in addition to my fathers, only bc they required it). I maintain a 4 block apartment complex, several lucrative industrial and commercial sites also. I have 300,000 liability. Soon after than I bought a new Trans Am fully loaded, including LS1 (320hp). I pay for the insurance, loan payments, sales tax, and insurance. Thanks to this business. Oh yea and I pay my taxes on income. Furthermore, I've organized my business as a LLC.
I hope I can be part of your image of youth, because I'm proud of many of my peers of what they've accomplished and what they certainly will.
I like the banana, when I saw it I knew to automatically skip over the post! Now I have to put him on my ignore list.
I have my wife's voice on my answering machine. Basically, it says that you've reached my lawn business and if your sending a fax you may start now, otherwise, leave your name and number and we'll call you back. Short and sweet. Right to the point. I also hate long intro's on answering machines.

yardboy, not being smart but I know you don't transport you're trailer with the T/A. What truck do you use? Also you said you pay the sales tax on you're car, thats a one time fee. Either you had it financed in with the loan or you paid it in cash before you bought plates for the car. I'm not bashing I'm just curious. What lucrative commercial contracts do you have and why do they only require $300,000 in liability insurance? Every commercial account we have requires a minimum of 1 million in liability.

You can not blame a kid for acting like one. I agree that it is annoying when a 15 year old kid tries to give advice or answer a question about something that they can have not possibly had enough experience to answer a question or give advice. But you have to take what one says with a grain of salt. It is more childish for an adult to stoop to name calling or belittling statements just because they think someone is wrong. I am a strong believer in that sometimes people can not help being who they are. just like in one members signature, he writes "If you're stupid, you deserve to suffer". I think that is the most insulting signature I've ever read. Stupid people in no way deserve to suffer. Ok I'm rambling, sorry
Back to the question, I think that your message might convey that you are to busy to handle more work.

kids grow up alot faster now then they did when I was 17. I was more worried about were the next party was or chasing girls. till the day my dad kicked me out of the house the day I turned 18 :dizzy: I grew up pretty fast after that.
I think its pretty cool these kids have the desire to run with the big dogs but a few seasons of mowing does not make them pros. they have learned most of what they know reading threads from guys that have been doing this for longer then they have been alive.
I myself wish I would have stayed in school so I would not have to mow lawns. I could have some cushy job working in the AC makeing half a mill a year  and then spend my days off fishing which I dont get to do cuz im mowing grass  o well you see where im going with this.
why do you want to be a lawnboy. if you are doing so well in school. pick a profession where you can retire a rich man. JMHO

I only think it gets annoying when the 15 year old dont have a clue what hes talking about. Your generalizing, and that not right. It is very possible that there are 15 year olds that know more about this biz than you and i. Another thing .... why shouldnt stupid people suffer???? Did they not have the same opportunities in our country as you and i? Should we just let them collect goverment aide until the day they die, because they are too stupid to hold a job? Im an avid reader, and a freelance researcher (so to speak - just a hobby) You are never too old to learn something new. Ignorance is no excuse. Think about it.
HarryD
I dont understand why you are detering someone from our industry. You make it sound like this is a profession for welfare recipients. Ask a John Allen from this site if it is possible to retire rich from our profession. Im sure he will change your thinking. You know if you worked just a little harder, you could eventually be sitting in air conditioning, while others are out making money for you. Ive been doing this 16 years, and i dont expect to do it for another 16, but my business will still be around than. Your other statement makes me wonder how many educated people actually mow lawns. Just because your a dropout doesnt mean you have to mow lawns. You could be working wherever you wanted if you tried hard enough. Stop the industry bashing, some of us are actually in love with their jobs ..... im one of them.

who said I was a drop out I just never went to collage because I would rather be outside but hey thats just me and I never said I hated doing this I love what I do. have been doing it for over 20 years but there are jobs alot better then cutting grass in the heat. I never said a guy could not make a living doing this because I am or retire with some cash in the bank if you play your cards right. I just think there are alot of better things to think about at 15 then cutting grass. don't be in such a hurry to grow up.
You make it sound like this is a profession for welfare recipients. I got a chuckle out of that:laugh:
aaahh... the humor of teen angst. it's really a funny thing, you watch MTV these days and see a bunch of 28 yr. olds with pink spiked hair whining about their girlfriends or their parents, or you have a bunch of 'thugs' rapping about shoes or how big the wheels on their cars are. and to think, the majority of our youth today idolizes these people.
i myself am only 23 and MPO is that i will never know enough and can never stop learning, sure i've had a tough life (who hasn't?), but that doesn't make me special nor does it make me a know it all. i joke with people and say "the first time i felt old was when i realized that i was now older than the center-fold models in my grandpas playboys"
right know i'm cooking in my safety-net job at the local pizza shop until i can get things underway. there just so happens to be a waitress who works there and she is only 15yrs. old. this girl is so persistant on the idea that she is an adult that it's ridiculous. one day i asked her "do you know how you can tell you are not an adult?", i said, "you keep wishing you were an adult, but real adults are always wishing they were still a kid" needless to say, she promptly shut-up.

No you did not say that you hated your profession. However your profile begs to differ. So what is it, do ou hate your job as your profile says? Or do you love it, like you wrote in your last post?? You need to make up your mind, it makes you look silly to people. Another contradictory statement you confused me on was when you said you wished you would of stayed in school so you could work in a/c. THAN you stated in your last post that you didnt go to school because you would rather be outside. Than in the SAME post you were complaining about working in the heat????? Can you shed some light, and clearity on that one??
I do apologise for assuming you were a dropout. I guess i took your wording the wrong way. You know you could always go back to school. Your not too old to change your life.
So please stop bashing the industry if thats what you want to do. If you love it like you also stated, than show the Lawnsite family some love ..... young and old. We are all brought here for the love of something your knocking.

I pull the trailer with a descent 85 GMC Sierra.. It's not the prettiest or new , but it works for what it cost.
The sales tax was paid cash(rather check) by me when I got my plates.. from a little pot leftover from the selling of my last car (1969 firebird.. pictured left) which I actually made money on.. well sorta. I also make payments this winter with money leftover from winter, so I don't have a job this winter. It's nice.
My largest commercial is a four block apartment complex.. I have a few other commercials. They only require me to have 300,000, so thats all I carry for now.

I'm 19 right now almost 20 and throughout my teen life I enjoyed being a teen, didnt work as much as i do now which was a plus, but if teens balance out school work, working and social life that is great. But yeah my parents tell me school is first and thats always true especially high school, then afterward its up to the teen to decide to get an education or work.
Anyways about the answermachine, I'm in the process of getting a number for my business and for a recording I would think you would need who they have reached, that your sorry you cant get to the phone right now and that they leave their name and number and a brief message and we will get back to you asap, beep.

Grazzmazter, What I was trying to say was a 15 year old kid doesn't know any better sometimes. They think they know it all but they don't. So Us adults have to just take what they say for what it is worth. We adults should be smart enough to know what it is worth. But bashing a kid for being a kid just isn't right.
My other point was, you can't always blame someone for being Stupid. I don't even like that word and I hope my children never use it. It can be hereditary. I would go as far as to say (this is my belief and I'm not suggesting that i'm right) that the person you become is up to your upbringing by your parents including habits that are passed on to you by genes and also habits that are taught to you by them. I know your going to say that you can always change and better yourself, but if you were not brought up to think that way then you will never do it. Man am I getting way off subject. I'm sorry, But I just wanted to get it off my chest.
By the way the I was not trying to slam the user that uses the signature. I actually like reading his post. And I think he is very knowledgeable in this business.

If you need any further information about me, feel free to drop me an e-mail : Grazzmazter@aol.com I have nothing to hide, and i will update my profile for you in the near future. Lets please stop these silly games, as it is very unproductive. I apologies for any inconvenience i have caused. If you further wish to discuss this matter, you can e-mail me at the above address also. There is no reason to continue this bickering on a public forum in front of the lawnsite family. Have a great day!

Great, another bash the kids post. Although I do agree with just about everyone that says that Lawncare3 is getting kind of monotonous. Sorry buddy, but if you posted on stuff that really made a difference you wouldn't get bashed. You should have better things to do like get ready for the season. Put a coat of wax on your mower, buff it up a little. Get your cards ready and stuff like that. As for the rest of you guys getting the impression that MOST teens on this site don't put out, you guys need to encourage us, not down us. I know that I work hard and god knows it. Last year I did 15 lawns a week while in high school and this year I'm shooting for 30. Making $10 G's a year in high school isn't that bad, is it? I hope you guys learn to appreciate who is the next generation, even if there are a few boneheads. My .02

I myself do not have a problem with the young people here. most if not all are beyond there age and will go far in this business if they chose to. there were no games intended grazzmazter if thats what you feel we were doing I apologize. I kinda felt like you were attacking me but then again I like debate :) so I hope there are no hard feelings my friend :waving:

There has been a very large amount of negative attitude against youth on this site recently. I am 21 myself and don't really know where i fit in, but i don't like the negative attitude.
lawnkid got terribly ridiculed for trying to take on a big project, and now several people are talking about the youth in general.
Give the young ones a break - help them become the as great as some of you think you are.
Suggestions and constructive criticism is nice, ridicule and misplaced jokes are not.
Everyone needs to respect the other members of this site for we all have something to learn.

Oh, and for all of the people on this site that think us "youngins" dont know jack sh%t, well maybe that is why we are subscribed to this forum; to learn from the more "experianced"! And to the some of us who reply to some of these threads and dont give the correct response, BIG DEAL! When you were growing up and going to school did your teacher tell you, you were stupid for giving the wrong answer? No, probablly not, probablly because you were the stupid kid who couldn't even come up with any answer, or were to stupid to understand the question!! You "professionals" are right us young ones lack knowledge, but
The difference between a successful person and others is not lack of strength, not lack of KNOWLEDGE, but rather in a lack of WILL.
And I would have to say that alot of us "youngins" have that will!
Sorry to be 'off topic' but....
I think the rhyming answering machine outgoing message is quite creative.
I do not really care for looooog messages myself...but I guess the actual number of words is all relative. Was the message recorded by Forrest Gump (slow drawling speech)...or a professional auctioneer (100 WPS*) ?
Mine is very short and to the point:
"Thank you for calling Smith's Lawn Service. We are not in at the moment-but if you will leave your name, your number, and a brief message, we will get back to you as soon as possible. Thanks again for calling...and have a nice day". (beep)
So far no one has sued me (or fire-bombed my house) so I suppose all is well. :)

Thanks Sean!! I keep my messages pretty much to the point and short. I have been thinking of adding something like "I am out of the office right now" just to sound a little more professional. I would really like to get a separate phone line, that way I know when the call will be business related, but just can't see shelling out another $35 a month right now. I think the idea of using a woman's voice for the out going message would be beneficial.

First when no one is in the office send your calls to your cellphones. How about the young members on here. I wish i had started when i was 18 i would be retired now. I started when i was 32 in five years i will retire see my point. Never bash these young members here some a smarter than us old folks.

I use my answering machine for my personal calls to my home as well as my lawn services call. Does anyone have a good idea for a message that would work for both situations without using the box 1 and box 2 feature. I just want all my calls left in one mail box.
Right now it just says " You have reached (704) 556- ****, we cant take your call at the moment so leave your name and number and we will get back to you as soon as possible".

I have a much shorter message on my machine and all of my customers have my cell number if some "lawn emergency" arises. I do however not think your message is too long and is quite good.

I used that message the first year I was in the biz. Now I do what just about everybody else does, short and sweet with my wifes voice. But the funny thing is, some of my older Customers tell me they really miss that message. It was entirely too long, but people seem to like things that are different.
Damn I'm BORED:sleeping:

I was giving out my cell # at first but quickly realized people were instead using that # more than the office #, so now I rarely give out the cell.

Ditto!
I never give out my cell. They expect you to drop everything at that moment and come running. I make sure my cell # is disguised when calling a customer. I do not want them picking it up on their caller ID.

Keeping your phone # a secret from your customers? Thats a new business strategy that seems to have escaped me. I hate the Idea of missing a call. I have this fear that if I am not available the client or possably a new client will go else where. You no, some were where they can get in touch with there SERVICE provider when they want to.To what ever= answer a question, make a complaint, give a complement maybe(hey it could happen);) I see it like this if you are looking for some one to provide a service what do you do? You start calling people who provide that service. I don't care how you get there number, yellow pages, flier mailer, makes no difference if you set down and start calling chances are the first person who you talk to has the best chance at your business because most people just want the job done. They don't want to spend a lot of time trying to find some one. My cell phone only rings four times before the machine picks up I wish it was ten. My message simply says-we can't come to the phone right now but your call is important to us so after the beep please leave your name and number and we will get back to you as soon as possible. I admit though I don't have any problem customers at least not so its a pain or anything. But hey thats why I love caller ID. As for the younger people trying to make there own way I say more power to you. Being older doesn't mean a thing if your so narrow minded you think you no every thing. If you don't like some ones post just skip to the next one big deal.As for me I learn, get laughs and pass the time with this site. Get stressed over an internet site? Or who's posting at what age? Why in the world would any one do that? Can't we all just be nice? It's easer and a lot more fun!!:D
