Hey, I'm here I'm just slow and lazy.. Busy week so only here a couple of times. I even forgot to e-mail you about the city of London auction today :( There was some pretty nice toys there, my wife set up the ground rules real quick,, &quot;nothing that wouldn't fit on my trailer&quot;. There was some good deals and some not so good deals too.<br> No wonder we are so busy, there are only 4 lawn businesses in Canada and we spend all our time here. Next time I go to a sale I'm gotta put a sign on my trailer with the Lawnsite.com addy on it and maybe we will get some more Canadians here. psssst hey buddy wanna buy a pavement line machine??for an extremely high price. Do you ever get the TriAd paper I sell lots of stuff in it?

I left Barrie Ontario three years ago to seek my fortune in Lynchburg Virginia. For a die-hard Leaf fan, moving to this hockey wasteland (Carolina Hurricane don't count) has been tough. Miss Swiss Chalet and Tim Horton's the most but so far more pros than cons...still miss the homeland though.

cantoo

Dylan, I get my Walker parts from my dealer and I get blades from my local Honda dealer. The rest of the stuff I usually buy new from Home Depot and then sell at auction or in the paper before it's useful life is over. This keeps my equipment new and usually trouble free.

I'm near Ottawa,in cottage country. Lot's of work this way which is why I haven't been on this site recently. I usually write in to correct Lawrence Stones ignorant posts re Canada and his boring posts about how the only way to make money in property maintenance is to spray poison or run old unreliable Toro walkbehinds. Can anyone explain why you walk when you can ride? Hope everyone is enjoying the hot economy here in Ontario.

Adam,<br>I'm not from Canada, but I wanted to let you know that you live in one beautiful country.<br>My folks got transferred to Nova Scotia, and lived up there for 2 years. During their time up there, I got to visit twice, and man did I love it. They lived just outside of Halifax, and everywhere I looked I saw unspoiled beauty. Peggy's Cove and the lighthouse was the favorite part of my visit.<br>One thing that I noticed right away, is that Canadians seem to actually take pride in their land. All the roadsides in the rural areas were litter free, and in the urban areas, you could eat off the streets. You sure as heck aren't gonna find that here in the States. It also seemed that the people there had more respect for their fellow man.<br>Someday, I hope to make it back up there. <br>On my way there, I stopped in Toronto and Ottawa (Airports) and found the same things there as I did in Halifax. Everyone was friendly and helpful. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of good people here in the States, but I think we could learn a lot from the folks in Canada.<p>Take care, <br>Tim :)

Adam, we were at the Bend on our bike this weekend and seen a good tee shirt.<br> Americans have the right to bare arms.<br> Canadians have the right to bare breasts.<br> Where would you rather live? <br> And of course the traffic was a real pain, do you ever go there much? And of course the scenery was great too.

Ab, sorry I didn't get back to you sooner, I've been working too much lately! We run Toro mowers, main is a Groundsmaster 18 that just blew it's motor, again. It has about 5'000 hrs on it though so I'm not really upset. Run a couple of Toro 21&quot; trim mowers and a new Echo srm2600 string trimmer. Lawns are growing great here but we don't make our money on lawns. Add ons are what brings in the real money and in the late 90's saved our bacon as the lawn care business became too cut throat. Landscaping makes way more profit then grass work, at least for us. Good to see that the UN found we are still the #1 country in the world to live in. We still care about our citizens, some thing our neighbours to the south might want yto look at. PROUD TO BE A SOCIALIST!

Hi Dodge

Mike here in barrie.....I started a snow blowing service this winter as I am a golf professional in summer and sit around doing nothing in winter (well not nothing usually home reno's and all the things on my wife's list that I cant do in summer)
anyway I got 20 clients for snow and am buying a Huskovarna tractor and 44 " blower for next year to take on more/bigger clients....but after discovering this site, I am going to go out and get some grass clients, especially since I love cutting grass(well the outcome) and I have worked the turf side in golf a bit and I am good at it.
Do you have any tips info to help me aquire some clients....I am hoping to get approx 20 for the season?
Thanks in advance

Glad I'm not the only one around fighting with them, makes you want to pack it all in and go work for someone else some days, we've been 2 and a half years with it now and likely be another 2 years before it's over. And just so you know JohnnieBud I did have an accountant, and not some dime store bookekeeper and they were the ones who effed up my year end, failed to report the final month and there was a huge discrepancy between my overall income and my GST income and in comes Revenue Canada, so don't ever trust that an accountant will keep the government away.

ff, we lost the fight for sure. They want $15,000, plus $2000 in interest and so far they have clawed back another $2000 in bits and pieces. It took over a year and we still have very little idea what we did wrong. They just gave us a number and said we owe it and payment is due in 15 days. Then ever third day or so we received another love letter clawing back other stuff like baby bonus, tax credits, low income refund etc. I'm afraid to get the mail anymore. I told the tax gentleman that they were really encouraging people to do cash business. I also told him we might start back up doing chemical spraying then I could afford to pay his taxes. We deal with another bigger company now. Did I mention we had a GST audit too, lost that one as well.
We're hoping for a better year this year, cutting lose any customers that even look sideways at us.

Ouch... and once Rev Can has you in their sights, they never forget. Good luck getting thru the hell of that. Even though my books are 100% clean and legit, I wouldn't want to go through an all out audit; way too much detail stuff that I don't want to deal with.

Had a commercial customer go through a GST audit and Rev Can called me to verify invoices. I told the agent that I could fax copies over to him and he sounded surprised that I was legit enough for that and told me not to bother. Ran into the customer about a year later and he looked like hell... probably lost 50 lbs...he thanked me for backing him on those invoices... and told me that they were going through his previous years stuff and I might get called again...

The moment I give the gov't more money that I make, that's the moment I'm done....

Hey, I hear you, they came back from auditing 2 years and 6 months GST and said we had $75000 in unclaimed income and we owed $2000 in GST. The income tax portion was $20000 owing then then same as you went after HST credits child tax benefit and even sent my wife a bill for $5000 for baby bonus for a total of $30000 owing to Revenue Canada. There was obviously some unclaimed income as the accountant had missed December in our year end and a bunch of snow money comes in but not that much and it was ridiculous the things they did. We had a truck that we fixed up and painted, then the motor blew so we repaired it, all told we ad $15000 in it in 2 years. The auditor told me the repairs were a capital expense not a one time deduction and had to be depreciated, so instead of changing it to a depreciated charge they just disallowed it, and not just it but all the repairs I had for those 2 years to all my trucks, 5 at the time for about $30000, so that money that went to repairs became unclaimed income! I built my friend a front step and patio with leftover material as a wedding gift, they asked me what the value of it was, I told them around $4500, so they gave me $4500 unclaimed income and charged me $600 GST for it, said I took work away from another contractor, my mistake, I was trying to be honest and told them about when I was questioned about leftover material. in my appeal my accountant pointed out that nowhere in the income tax act does it say you must charge for your work. Appeal started a year ago, haven't heard ****! Just a warning to anybody that might get audited (Hopefully none of you ever do) answer only what they ask honestly and don't offer up anything you don't need to, oh and get an accountant that knows te income tax act inside and out!

Those on the list of trades where there's a reputation for getting paid off the books have an increasing chance of being audited. You want an accountant or tax lawyer with a good record of handling such disputes -- and their fees are a business expense.
