Pros- No trailers or trailer parts to mess with
Can fit into the same spots and sometimes even better then a truck and trailer
Can be used for the same things besides mowing that a trailer can like mulch and landscaping
You can attach all sorts of tool boxes to them
Cons- For smaller companies you need a 2nd truck instead of just dumping the trailer and going
Ive seen them used for plowing but look like a PITA for residential driveways
Cabs dont look that big to me for some reason
Ive never had one but thats my opinion them. I have run the F-450 with dump beds on them with walls and those are versatile trucks to have. You can plow and salt with them and they are great for leaf cleanups with a leaf loader.

I have seen some cabover's here in KC and look EASY to work out of....Think Signature runs a lot of them. Don't want to spend a ton of money as I won't put that many miles on...so a used one should work fine. I will shop eBay and see what 's out there. Thanks!

If you have a big enough place to store a landscape bed type truck that is the way to go. No backing up a trailer, easier to drive. We built a 28 x 28 garage in our back yard last fall and I made sure the door was tall enough to back a dove-tail type truck in it. Plan for the future!!

I have had the same issue but I am not concerned. I feel the weather plays a big role in when people will call you back. BTW I put some of my customers on a 2 year contract and do it everyother year. I alternate what year the customers renew that way you don't have a firedrill renewing everybody at the same time. Commercial customers love it because they know their prices won't be going up for that period of time.

I dont do much. Work around the house. Things get tight but for the most part I can make it through without a second job. From what I understand we are supposed to be dry till next week and then some snow but everyone is calling for a pretty snowy February which would be fine with me.

You might try your church or see about JCCC on Quivira, if they have a bulletin board. All of our employee's go to our church, I don't do that on purpose it's just worked out that way. I need to fill another position for a new person 2 days a week also. Just thinking ahead when my guys leave me for full-time positions. You might have better luck with someone without experience. Less bad habits to break. You can teach him your way of doing things instead of the "know-it-all" attitude. My biggest things I look for are dependability and clean-cut. I can teach the rest.

Eventually you have to make the jump. Right now you (we) are not business owners. We are employees.
Lots of headaches and red tape but if you find someone you can trust then you can use your time building your business instead of coming home dead tired and going to bed.

To be honest a lot of my customers are switching because they cant afford Ryans prices anymore. They are almost 50% - 100% higher then another guy I use.
As far as a pact with Boresow...dont believe everything you hear. Jerry is a great friend of mine. I worked for him for 5 years and still see him quite a bit. They scratch each others back but thats as far as it goes. Your best bet is to work through the Ryan techs you know and get them to get you the leads. Either that or find another guy who just does chemicals only. I do some work with Huerter Lawn Care and we give each other business.

Ryan does a great job. They are the best in the business around here with only the most highly trained workers. For me and my customers it was and still is a monetary decision to find someone else. They used to do my yard at $150.00 per app. The guy I use now is doing it for $85.00.

I don't think they are that far off in price for the quality of work they do, unless they've raised them significantly in the last couple of years. I'm right in line w/ their prices for the most part. It just depends on what you are looking for. As long as the customers aren't headed for Chem Lawn I'm happy!

Ryan's is good there is no doubt to it. Do not forget there is always somebody out there who does better. As respective owners do not get into the mindset that my former boss had that nobody can do it as good as Ryan's when I mowed for him they treated his commercial properties and to be honest that didn't look any better than how we treat them in house.

It was creosoak and it was outlawed and r+r ties were rotted when the railroad got rid of them. And kiss the clothes goodbye after working with them.
paolaken
02-11-2009, 10:02 AM
thats what the ties were treated with. after the RR was done with them and tie walls were built the walls would get painted. they definatly ruined some clothes though. i'm surprised the ties don't last longer. there are sections of track around here that get replaced every 12-18 months.

I'm going to wait a couple weeks still, but I'm still trying to decide what I'm going to do this year. In January, I accepted a position as Operations Manager for CAS in Lee's Summit, they've been trying to get me for years but the things just couldn't work out right. I have my snow/salt covered, but am still trying to decide how I'm going to handle my contracts for the next season. One of the things that we did w/ CAS was have the guys start working four 10-hour days (Mon - Thurs) & any emergency calls after-hours & w/e would be O/T. I renewed just enough of my maintenance accounts so far to keep them if I intend to do them on my own as a long day on Friday. Back to part-time mowing if I go that route, but am still considering sub-contracting or hiring. I also registered the new company name a few weeks ago, just need to work on getting things changed over on the insurance & work on getting the bank accounts & licenses changed. Oh the joys of dual-business management!

Ya know, I don't really like Don's Hummer. I kind of feel like a fat guy in a little suit. There's no leg room in it whatsoever. They're paying my truck payment & any fuel, maintenance, repairs, etc... so I guess now I need new shocks & to add some more cushion to the sorry excuse for Dodge seats. I dont blame you. Im almost 6'4 and its tough to find vehicles that are comfortable.

Over 20 years in this industry covering everything from commercial, industrial and gov. mowing, landscaping and irrigation. The last 15 have been as a manager either as a Production or as the Operation manager. I am one of the best at making crews extremely effecient therefore more productive. I have and will physically get in there and do the work, and then turn around and be able to do the paperwork and meetings and sales. So as to what field I want to be in is wide open, I am ready and willing to start right out of the box, the only training I require is just on how your paticular company likes certain things.

Wright I am sorry for the smart a$$ comments that some guy's make. You have to realize that this board is full of people who do this part-time and are not solely dependent on it for income so they really don't have as much at stake. With that being said I think you really need to look at the weather as a deciding factor when to send them out. It really is a crap shoot. My opinion the BEST time is late March to early April. Again depending on weather. Good Luck!

Last year I started mowing with about 40 lawns all by my self. By mid summer I had 62 Lawns by my self and that was a lot of work I hired a collge friend for 2 days a week. By the time school started up a kid called me and wanted to sell my 12 yards and I made the decision to have 1 full time guy. If you have one guy that you can trust andtrain well it makes things a lot easier. By fall I had 80 yards and weeded it down to 70 good lawns. This year Im starting out with those 70 and really only want about 10-15 more good yards.
With 100 yards you would have to mow 20 a day to sill have your weekend free not to mention hedge trimming, mulching and other projects. I hope everything works out well for ya, see you around.

If I remember correctly if a sign is on a street corner, depending on what side of the sidewalk its on then its on "city" property and has to be left there until the city deems it necessary to remove it.
IN2MOWN
03-09-2009, 08:52 AM
Scratch what I said. Here it is:
In situations where they are permitted, temporary signs can be placed only after permission has been granted by the owner or resident of the adjacent property.
It then goes on to say this:
In general, temporary signs are not allowed in the public right-of-way (typically the area within 10 to 12 feet of the street curb, including any public sidewalk)
IN2MOWN

BTW, I referenced the city of Overland Park for their laws about it since thats where the alleged sign was placed.

A friend of mine used to mow it about 4 or so years ago and NOTHING good to say about it.
He signed a 2 year deal with them and told me they were usually 60-90 days late with payment.
Gotta love people like that.

You're gonna start weekly mowings next week? What about everyone else, when do you guys plan on starting?
I thought maybe the 30th? or week after?
I just started in the business last year and started late in the season, so not 100% sure of when usual start times are.

I would think that it's going to be near freezing it going to slow the growth, you could mow if ur cutting at 2 in. I do alot of aeartion/seeding in the spring its better than doin a 1 time clean up!

Why do you seed in the spring?

I guess if you aerate and overseed early enough you'll be ok, but the germination rates are not as good as in the fall. Just don't use a weed n feed or pre-emergent until everything has sprouted and mowed for the first time.

I dont do apps but I was under the impression that the first is down already and the second goes down in about 9-12 weeks.
The clover in my yard is coming up already. its been such a warm winter that I dont think the soil went as cold as it usually does.
But even if you put it down later thats still more of a reason NOT to overseed this time of year.

Its just not worth it and it could be your rep on the line.

Yup. We sure did.
I do things a little differently then most companies. I dont cut it short in the fall so in the early spring I cant cut a layer of brown off and underneath is all green. It gives the grass a jumpstart and with the fert in the pre-em it starts to grow sooner and quicker.
If they call and ask for the cut then Im doing it.

Thats exactly what Im talking about. First cuts. Some of my yards will need cutting the following weeks though. I usually have 100% of my yards started by the 4th week in April. Later in April because of the zosia.

I always go back and look at invoices from the past years for start times.... It's hard to judge sometimes.... But I always seem to be out the first time from March 17th to the 20th.... And why.... Cause my main job in in drywall all over....And when you drive all over doing clean up, and going to the dump, And if all the BIGGER crews are out doing it.... There no reason the little guy can't... I am ready, can't wait..... This 18 hr a week crap is getting old!!!!!!!!!!!!! My grass money was " play money" now it's pay the bills money............ Everybody hang in there, I hope this turns around soon... I only lost 1 cut, but it was due to the owner selling the building... And the new owners use one of the BIG guys.... Oh well, Just try and pick up another some where...................:weightlifter:

I gotta buddy who owns a tree company called Franzwa Tree Care. His # is 913-422-9444. His name is Mike. Been in business a while now. He's got a forestry degree from Iowa State. Certified arborist. Liscenced and insured to the hilt. Little pricey but his work is worth it. He's out of western Lenexa but goes all over.

Kansas guys:
http://kansascity.craigslist.org/lbg/1074022336.html
I need a bid to have 2 pieces of property mowed for this summer. One is a vacant lot we own about 2 blocks north of Johnson drive in Shawnee. It is exactly 1 acre in size. There is only weed eating on one side. The other is my mother's residence in south overland park off of 143rd and Switzer.. It is in a cul-de-sac and is medium sized I would say The back is bigger than the front but not by much. I mowed it last year with my push mower and it took me about an hour to mow and weed-eat it.
The lot I usually get mowed every other week while my mom's needs it weekly because she has a watering system.
Please email me what you think you could charge me for it and your phone number and I will call you on Sunday. I prefer to use somebody thats local if possible.
Thank you
