The ball joints were popping and I took it into the shop, and they're BAD! Quoted over $900, and said I need a new radiator too, just another $700+-ouch
you can get a radiator way cheaper than that and put it in yourself.

We shelled out the drive pump idler pulley on our 853 Bobcat; hoping to get it back late today or tomorrow. Otherwise it is just the F1145 with blade or broom. Very effective machine, but we have a lot of asphalt to clear.

My wife and I found 2 puppies and a mom about a month ago. They where left in a cage in a parking lot. We have found homes for the mom and the female puppy, we still have the male puppy though. He is a black lab mix and is about 3-4 months old. My wife works at a vet clinic and they check them all over and gave him the first round of shots. If you or someone you know might be interested let me know. Sorry it's not about Lawn Care. :) Thanks

Ya leaving pets in a cage at least let them run free! Am looking at a 7.3L Ford diesel super duty was wondering what you all thought. Second I am having a dickens of a time finding out what the payload capacity of an F-250 and F350 99-03 truck super duties. I have heard 4,000 for the 250 and 6,000 for the 350 does this sound right. I am going to be putting in a salt spreader and I do not want the truck squating like I see some trucks going down the road.

I was wondering what the standard rate is around the kc area is for a snow plow per hour. I have two HOA that want bids for doing the city streets. I figured an hourly rate was the best way to go about it. I currently get $75 an hour being a sub contractor. I have a 8'2" v plow. I was thinking about $150 an hour. Whats everyones thoughts on this.

I was out talking to Jerry Boresow the other day and he was pretty shocked to get the call from Ryan that they were raising their prices up almost 5% again this year.
The guy I use used to work for Ryan for a while and he's on his own now. He uses the same product and the same system but is considerably less then Ryan. It just goes to show the more overhead you have the more you have to pass it on to the customer.

Hahaha thats funny that kid was such an a$$clown, I knew him in boy scouts he was a tool back then. I pulled this from Gary Lezaks blog, whom I personally think is the most accurate forcaster in KC.
A major winter storm is about to form southwest of Kansas City. Freezing rain, sleet, and snow will be developing across western and northern Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, southern Kansas, and southern Missouri Thursday into Friday. This will likely be a rather wet storm so if you have travel plans to the south there will likely be significant impacts on travel to our south. This is another tricky storm and as it has just moved inland across Southern California.
There has been a trend slightly northward on the models and we must pay close attention to this trend. Over the years I have seen many storm systems taking aim on Kansas City with Omaha and Des Moines expecting just a few clouds, and then suddenly we bust our forecast and they get blasted to the north. So, only a slight shift north and we could be Omaha and Des Moines.
The latest models are coming out, and the NAM stopped the northward trend for now. It still forecasts the snow to work its way into the southern part of our viewing area, just south of Kansas City. There is a lot of time left for this storm to come farther north which would have a significant impact on our local area, but slightly farther south and this storm will miss us to the south.
We will answer your questions through early this afternoon, but I don't want to overanalyze this storm with it still being 36 hours away and Kansas City being on the edge. We will put more effort into our analysis later on in the day, so check back in. In the mean time a weak disturbance is passing by today with some thick cloud cover and possibly a snow shower or two. Have a great start to your day

Hey guys I saw the thread and thought I would say hello. I mow in the Northland area. I have recently decided to mow full time and am wanting to ask some basic questions.
When is the best time to start advertising for new customers?
Is there a time frame for a mowing season that everyone goes by?
I am not wanting to lowball anyone and cheat them out of their well earned customers so I hope someone can give me a basic pricing structure that is being used in the Northland as well. Do it by the yard or by the minute?
Is it a good idea to just mow and refer all customers for fertilizing and seeding to a company that does nothing but that?
What grass seed is everyone using in the Northland?
Is there anyone out there who just does application that is interested in a referral agreement?
Any help or suggestions for a new guy will be greatly appreciated.

Like I tell everyone else there is not a bad time for advertising. Start now. Do it early and do it often!
We mow FT from the last weekend in March till the last week in October. Last year I was still cutting lawns every 10 days into November. I try and get about 32 weeks of mowing in.
We have a $35.00 minimum excluding special circumstances like a duplex or condo.
We are starting chemical apps next season (2011). I have found most people like the "one stop shop". Just remember that you have to be licensed to put down any sort of weed control or pesticide. As far as seeding goes...do it yourself. Its a great add on and you can make good profits.
We use a thin fescue blend when we overseed.

I have a buddy in real estate and he got me all the addresses for Mission Hills and about 15 subdivisions out south (Leawood OP) that I send them to twice a month and will continue to do so till about late May. Ive already started to receive calls and emails for spring cleanups and gutters which Im starting this week. I also send them to the 400 addresses in my database for people that I have done work for in the past.
We also use door hangers. I use the 10 house rule when doing this. Ill start a house and my guy will go up and down 10 houses on either side and across the street. Then he will come back and help me finish up.

we have a second business, a concession trailer where we serve food for events. today is our first event in leavenworth. the wife, daughter and one of my helpers is up there. not a good day for that.:dizzy:

I'm had about 1/4th of what you got, also saw the new trailer sign, looks asome. My dad asked if I wanted to say high, but I thought that would be kinda weird, If you've seen the white 6x10 trailer with team green lawn & landscape you'll know that's me.

i've had 11 different customers call me this week wanting thier sprinkler system on. most of the say its dry out. what are these people thinking. it will be a long while before the grass needs watered. if i turn them on now, they just start watering away wasting water. in reality, the lawn probably won't need water till about June. i hate wasting water.

First 1st thought, "too bad".
2nd thought was "he might have lived if his roll bar had been up. Maybe it would have been easier to roll it back over if the bar had been up?" Hard to say I reckon, not knowing the exact circumstances.

What is this rain you are talking about? I put flotation tires and lawn drying hydro blades on the Stander, seems to be working out!
Seriously, its getting old and several lawns are saturated bad. Its not pretty leaving dirty tracks in lawns, but at least it washes out with the next rain!

Hey...
The Royals are in Cincy this weekend to play the Reds in interleague play.
A Q for U:
How can the KC Royals be 11 games under .500 with that kind of tremendous offensive power in their lineup?
Statistic-wise, KC's pitching doesn't look that awful.
What gives?

Before today Grienke was 1-8 because of lack of run support. Their offensive is feast or famine at best.

I'm about to lose my mind with this rain nonsense. What is it the last few days? Like one huge storm every five hours? WTF? Are we a rain forest now?
My girl and I nearly got swept away in our Dodge Neon on Sunday night just before midnight. Leaving the Wal-mart on 103rd and Metcalf in OP, north exit from the parking lot- we drove through what I estimate to be over two feet of water. Came over the hood of the car style. The creek that runs along the bike trail had overflown its banks so far that we were in it, even though it has to be a couple hundred feet away either direction. I didn't even visually register that I was headed into trouble until I noticed the headlights shining through WATER like I was diving on 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Thank God it wasn't worse, I was obviously pissed when it went down, but after driving around and hearing people in the area talk about it? I am lucky we weren't swept away and drowned. A car a mile from where I was stuck was carried downstream four blocks!
On the plus side, I have a cherry tomato in the garden that I just measured at seven and a half feet tall, not including the raised bed it is in.
Based on the way it looks out my window, I would bet everyone else is going to be taking it easy this evening, so how the hell are you all doing? Any musings on the jacked up weather?

Not like it was standing up and waving at me while I was headed towards it, man. It's kind of like not seeing the bulk of an iceberg due to its being under water. Also, I was dealing with seriously limited visibility because of both the rain and fogged out windows (remember it was a rain storm in mid-summer?)... Lots of humidity gathering on the windows. It's a lot easier to get stuck in flood water than you seem to think. I guess I can relate, I used to always think the people you see on the news stuck on their hood surrounded by flood water were just suffering as a result of their own stupidity, but now I know better. I hope you can keep on not "getting it", because it sucks when you learn this lesson. Hope with my explaination you can at least kind of understand.
