I wasnt going to help them. They were actually on private property tearing up land that a man uses the grass to bale and sell to some local farmers to feed their cattle and horses.

If those idiots are not smart enough to figure out you dont drive a car through 3 foot tall grass after all that rain next to a flooded creek then thats their problem.

Its a shame you put a passengers life in danger. I highly doubt you could not see 2 feet of standing water in front of you. I have a feeling you saw it but thought it would be "cool" to try and make it through it. Probably trying to impress your lady and in the process putting her life at risk. If she is smart she will find someone else. :hammerhead::hammerhead::hammerhead:

No specific brand in mind, as far as size I would say 7-8'?. This will be my first year plowing, not finding a whole lot of used stuff out there right now.

That doesn't sound like curtis at all, I buy most of my stuff from them. Curtis & Carol are very nice and treat everyone with respect, and it's closer to my home the blue valley. I still like blue valley but I don't want to drive to 199th & antioch every time Something breaks.

Wow -- My post above was horrible -- shouldnt try to type more than 1 word with my thumbs!

What I was trying to say was sat how good of an experience I have had with Rob at RG Small Engine in Olathe. www.rgsmallengine.com/ He has done great work for me in the past == all the way from the simple oil changes to the more complex stuff on my big mowers.

His rates are reasonable and his turnaround is VERY quick! 913-839-2495

My only complaint with Arnolds has been their turnaround time -- but I know if you are a regular -- you get in and out faster.

I clean mine off every night when I sharpen. Clean decks keep the grass moving. I also hose them off so diseases are not transfered from one lawn to the next.

PAM works well but I suggest getting the fluid film. Its also a rush inhibitor. Its like WD-40 on steroids.

is anyone going to be doing grub control soon ? I've had trouble timing mine just right so they dont kill lawns here. I'm also taking the applicators test on the 6th, anyone have any advise ?

Which ones are you taking?

The best advice I could give is not to take more than one test at a time. The first time I did it I took the General and the 3b. Had a horrible time. The second time I did it. I took the General alone and then went back a couple months later and took the 3b. Passed both with flying colors.

Hello,

I am new to these forums.

I do lawn care and landscaping and have decided to get into snow plow.
I have done a lot of research on the subject and after seeking some advice I have decided to look for sub work my first year.
Like any other profession it is unwise to jump in both feet. Instead of assuming I can do this the right way without any prior experience I thought I would start here and see if i can sub myself and my truck/plow for a season to make sure I am qualified to give good service.

I have a newer 3/4 ton diesel with blade.

Please call me at 816-769-6336 if you are interested in talking about this.

What do you mean by "handling" them?

cod8825
09-25-2011, 09:27 PM
By "handling" them I mean do you try and do it and take a chance of the grass coming up does one day, two three days mean the difference between successful and failure or not looking as good as possible. When do you cut the seeding off. We know that you should do the job six to eight weeks before a hard freeze which for us is around the 28th of October according to National Weather Service.

Do you recommend spring seeding even though it doesn't work as well, DORMANT SEEDING how do you explain that to them and how it works. Do you charge as much for dormant seeding because it is a different type of work. T

That is what I mean. In years past I would have a couple overseeding jobs this year I am not sure that I am going to get them done. The lawns that are looking nice that I did at the first of September their neighbors are calling on and asking I really do not want to do any jobs after the first of October.

Im still going to seed. Seed can germinate in 7-10 days with plenty of water and some starter fert.

I wont seed in the spring. At all. Once the pre-m's go down there is no point in doing it. Ive never tried the dormant seeding and doubt I ever will. To many intangibles that go into it.

Id go ahead and do it in all honesty. It really cant hurt anything if you do. If its just aerating and overseeding to an already established yard then you have nothing to lose.

Anyone use this seed this year? If so, any issues with germination? On lawns where I've verticut using this seed, the germination has been very sparse. Of note, these are non-irrigated lawns and rely on the customer watering like crazy due to the dry weather.

Just curious to hear if anyone else has had bad results...

Does anyone here do snow? Ive been in business for 11 years cutting grass and doing landscaping and this year Im jumping into snow. Ill be doing all my houses and a couple commercials that they own. Probably about 50 or so properties. Ive been helping out the guy I used to work for since I went into business so I know the in's out and out's of plows and how to do it.

Im looking for a pricing system though. I know Ill be separating it into groups like the following.

1-4"
5-8"
9-12"
12" and above

Im just not sure how to price driveways from a single drive to a double to a circle.

Anyone have any advice?

FLC2000, I've been clearing snow for 10 years or so, but only on our commercial properties (primarily small apt bldgs around the Plaza). Generally, we clear once per storm.

Never been able to get the economics to work for residential. I'm sure there are homeowners who would pay $100 to have their drive and walkway cleared and treated, but I don't even want to pursue it, fearing I'm going to end up with a handful of properties that become a nuisance.

For commercial, I price for clearing and chemical treatment separately. The clearing will increase with the accumulation. 4"-6" = 150% of clearing bid. 6"-8" = 200%, etc. On some properties this is set at 4" intervals.

Is anybody structuring their bids different from this?

I need to subcontract snow removal work on a small lot located just north of the Nelson Art Gallery. The lot is approx 5000 sqft, enclosed by buildings and parking garages. There is no place to pack the snow in the lot. Thus, it needs to be carried out of the lot and dumped in a vacant lot across the street. It requires a bobcat, which I don't have.

In my experience with residential snow removal in the years I've done it, homeowners typically only want it done once per event and like one price. Sort of like mowing, most charge the same in the spring as they do in the summer, regardless of rapid or limited growth.

Thanks for the replys guys. I think Im going to hold off till next year on the snow. I have about $7000.00 saved up and I think Im going to use it as my nestegg for the winter so I dont get backed up.

I did take $1000 of it for a steal on craigslist. Picked up a fairly new dual axle trailer with trimmer racks, backpack blower racks and a water cooler rack from a guy who is going out of business. Made off like a bandit.
