I'm also trying to trade my trailer for a bigger one. I've got a good condition 2001 model Texas Bragg utility trailer with a ramp, trimmer traps, water cooler holder and a big Buyers box. Decent tires on good rims. 3500lb single axle. Wood floors good except for a 8in hole in between two boards. I can fix it depending on the offer
I'd like to get a 16fter, pm me to talk details. I'm open to trade for certain items, especially a race quad. Thanks

Today I was driving my 16' trailer with some furniture on 87th and Antioch Rd, when I was stopped by a Highway Patrol officer for exceeding the 2000 lbs limit and not having the trailer registered. Here is the problem…instead of giving me a ticket or a warning; he gave me a MISDEMEANOR with a citation for Feb. 1st. The officer told me that’s what they are supposed to do instead of giving tickets.
My record is clean and will hate be affected by this or even going to jail as I was told by a friend. Any help will be greatly appreciated, Should I hire an attorney?
The good thing was that he did not fine me for not having breaks on the two axles, and all the other stuff that my trailer needs.

How does he know you only have 2000 lb limit? Most dually trailers have 3500 axeles.

Yes, what is the GVWR of your trailer....should be on the plate....or title (if it has one)? Also, did he put you on some scales? Without putting out on scales and knowing your GVWR, I wouldn't think there would be anyway he would have a case!!! Nothing you can do about the inregistered trailer if it's not tagged.
My tandem axle has a GVWR of 7700lbs. I am guessing the trailer might way 700 lbs, leaving me with 7000 pounds to load.

Talk to a traffic attorney and dicuss the possible charge fines and punishment, and find out how they will handle your case. PM me for the name of a good attorney. There is an online forum where you can ask legal questions just like this. legaladvice.com find it on google.
bottlefed89
12-19-2005, 06:59 PM
Yup, talk to an attorney. If he didn't scale you, I'd think you'd have an argument there, registered or not, how's he know what your furniture weighs?? go to a scale and weigh your trailer, see if the weight issue is even true. I think even a decent attorney can get you lesser charges, though you may have to pay...
If you were honestly only hauling some furniture, I'd bet you weren't at 2000lbs. My 18' trailer weighs somewhere between 1100-1300lbs, I forget exactly, but maybe you didn't have 700-900lbs. of furniture??
MisterGreen
12-19-2005, 07:33 PM
Thank you for all your recommendations. I call an attorney today. I will register it tomorrow and fax both the ticket and the registration to him, then the attorney will make phone calls to see if they can dismiss it. Wish me luck..

In Kansas, all double axle trailers must be registered...it's the law. That is why I keep my single around. In Missouri all trailers have to be registered. Sounds like you are going to at least pay a fine and get the thing registered. I see you driving all over town (just last weekend in fact) plus your signs and am suprised you havent been pulled before if you didnt have a plate on it. I didnt notice it last time I saw you.

I had a trailer stolen between Jan. 16th and the 21st in Lee's Summit. Just found out tonight when I went to check on it. Keep your eyes peeled for a 6x10 open trailer, black with 21" high rails with one row of 2x6's on the bottom, mesh gate, 3 position trimmer rack with black toolbox on the front and grey wheels.
After describing it, kind of sounds like everyone elses trailer! Wish I had a picture of it to show, it is a one of a kind. Hopefully I can recover it fairly quick, not much time before season kicks into gear. Was storing it two doors down from the Grass Pad, had a lock on the coupler but it should have been easy to break.
Thanks, Tim.

Green- Ill get ahold of you in the next couple weeks. Desk is full of junk right now and Im trying to organized for the new year. Thanks!
Mowforyourmoney- By the time april rolls around Im 2 weeks into cutting season. Espescially with the weather we have been having I might start earlier. By April 1st I would say 75% of the people who care about their yard have already picked out who they are going to use.
If you want to start picking up customers for 2006 your running about a month behind! Hit the bricks now. IMO people want to get a company and get rid of the hassle as soon as possible.
If youre in western Shawnee go up and down Johnson Dr west of the ballfields and before K-7 dropping flyers and doorhangers off. Lots of new construction out there.

I have actually been doing alot of advertising and bidding in the Blue Springs and Lees Summit areas. More than likely we will bring a new crew up there a couple days a week.
Hazell, I get postcards from VistaPrint.com
They have great deals like 1000 for 120 bucks. They are 2 sided with color and gloss. Ive only sent out a hundred about 2 weeks ago and Im sending another 100 out this weekend and I just ordered 2000 of them of this morning.
VistaPrint is a great site that I highly reccomend. They have great products that are very inexpensive.
Obviously it costs more then dropping off fliers but its more professionial and it beats walking around all day.

Ive already started sending out stuff. IMO most people have their minds made either by the previous year or early in the year on who they are going to use. Start now and keep sending things out for 2 months.
I usually try to pick out a couple big neighborhoods and hit them 2-3 times over the course of a month. The more they see your name the more likely they will hire you.

One fold will be basic lawn care (mowing and such), the next will be landscaping services, and the last will be my chemical program.
All of the services will have individual lines next to the them so I can handwrite the prices for them.
On both sides will be pictures. They will be printed on nice glossy paper. Also included will be a history of my company.

I'm in Franklin Co. over near St. Louis. I'm just starting out part time and was wanting some advice on bidding lawn mowing. I want to make sure I'm not bidding too low and don't want to cut out guys who do this full time. (I only do 3 lawns but would like to double that) I figure KC would be close to the same prices. Lot size 75'X145' I get $30 bucks. I think that might be low. Do you have tricks on square footage bidding?

I have a $ 35 MINIMUM that I started last year and I didnt have one problem gaining new clients.
That lot size you gave is almost 11,000 sq ft. I would be charging $40-45 for it.
I try to get around $4.00 per 1000 for mowing.
If your work is good most people wont mind paying the extra few bucks a week to have you do it.

I need a whitespire birch. I couldn't find one last year. I have 10, 4 year old trees and one keeps dieing.

How big do you need?
I need a pretty good size one, but i'm not sure i can afford it. I guess i'm looking for one up to 2". Give me a couple of different prices. My oldest ones are about 25' tall and 4" or so.
The one that keeps dieing has been replanted 3 times. Any ideas on why one would keep dieing. On the second tree in the hole we over-dug the hole, put a little gravel in the bottom, then good soil. We thought maybe it was holding water. On the third tree, we over dug again, removing all the gravel and just putting good soil in. Neither one of the trees would root. They are like twigs in the ground with nothing holding them in. :dizzy:

PLM-- a couple suggestions.
Since none of the other birches seem to be effected it seems to be a problem either with the hole or the spot. I would imaginge it is some type of cultural problem.
The key to a birch tree is its roots. If you have heavy clay soils -- you need to dig a very large amended hole for them -- I like to go out atleast 10 - 12 feet. This hole does not need to be especially deep -- maybe only 18 - 24 inches or so. They are shallow rooted. If you are just digging the minimum hole (twice as big as rootball) -- put back in native soils-- otherwise you are creating a clay pot with nice soil that the trees will never grow out of.
Its on the corner -- does it get considerablly more sun or wind there? Birches do not like to dry out. Have your last three summer been especially hot making it hard for these trees to establish?
Birches can be very susceptible to herbicide dmage as well abosrbed through their shallow roots. Since its on the outside corner -- could that be an issue? Al ittle 2-4d around their base can be a disaster.
Just a couple thoughts. Birches are a favorite -- but they have issues.

I have been mowing about 10 yards per season since 8th grade. This year I bought the new Toro 40" Hydro so I can get more yards. I also got a new Toro Recycler to do my trimming with. I am possibly looking for a new blower and trimmer (preferably stihl). Also, I am wanting some advice on acquiring yards in the eastern Jackson County area. Any advice on getting my business going in this area would be excellent.

Try some referrals, or an ad. Independence Examiner respondants will be pretty tight with their money. You might try the Lakewood area, putting flyers on doors. You would have to do this several times though. Are you wanting to mow the lawn across the street from us again. If you do just let me know. We are getting out of the residential market pretty much. We just do theirs because they are lifelong friends of my wifes. If you want to talk give me a ring or pm. Trent Roberts 816-350-0886.

Best way to answer some or even all of those questions is to contact your local Highway Patrol Division. I know they have limitations on size of trailer and weight.
One thing I do know for certain (because I called the Highway Patrol) is that ANY vehicle disigned to haul cargo is a commercial vehicle. But as long as the owner is the operator, you don't have to have any special license.

There is no way you will ever make any money charging $25hr. By the time you pay taxes, workmans comp, insurance, overhead, and other expenses associated with operating a legitimate business, there is no way there will be any left over. We get at least $45 - 60hr for all maintenance labor, $50-90hr for all landscape install labor.
You should be getting $35 or more for a yard.

Agreed. I went up from a 30 to a 35 dollar minimum last year on all new clients and I met no resistance at all.
Im a solo operator and I charge $60.00 per hour for cleanups and other work like that and I just raised up to $80.00 per cubic yard of mulch installed.
25 an hour isnt going to cut it. You need to realize that you CAN make more then that.
Starting out sucks and its hard. The biggest thing you have to do is get a marketing plan together and advertise like crazy.
Plan your work and work your plan.

We have a minimum charge for mowing of $40.00. If we can't get that they are not our type of customer. There are exceptions to that though. If they are a neighbor of a customer we might lower the minimum, because of drive time. Our mulch charge is $90.00 per yard installed, our clean-up prices are $45-50.00 per hr. Alot of ot depends on what area you are working in too. Certain parts of the city will not yield even close to these prices. We are getting out of the residential market due to the amount of lower end competition. Commercial is tough too and poses challenges in different areas.

Over here on the KS side in JO its alot easie to get my prices. Ive gotten a couple calls from the Wyandotte side and they flip when I give estimates. I just flat out quit going over there.
Its the opposite for me though on RES V COMM. I would much rather have residential then commercial. Way less of a hassle. I used to do quite a few commercials and the communication with them was terrible, I always felt like I was dealing with 4 or 5 people and nobody seemed to agree on anything.
Im curious, has everyone here taken the KS pesticide test? A buddy of mine just called and said he took the general and 3B test. From what he said it sounded completely different then what I took.

Do they change it on a regular basis?I think there has always been a few different versions. I think this keeps the cheating down. Here in Wichita there is usually 3 people per table. I took the test last month and seemed much more difficult than 3 years ago. Seemed like there were more questions on the laws governing pesticide use vs plant pest (insects and diasease) compared to the test 3 years ago. I am not that everything that was on the test was in my study manual. I might need to get a new manual before I take the next test.

Dont get discouraged but 350 isnt that much. Youre going to have to send out 1000s and remember lots of people wait till the grass is actively growing for a couple weeks or so to call someone.
Im looking for a sub for my sprinkler work it comes up. Inevitably someone asks for me and Ive always turned it down in the past. I need someone who knows what they are doing on repairs. I dont have any work now but I need to set someone up with it just in case I get asked for it.

No really, download google earth, punch in their address, use the measuring tool and measure the lot, come back and tell us. Last year I had much better call back success on my flyers. The problem is that I was desperate and said I would cut for 20.00. That was when I had very little expense. No liability, No Workers Comp, and a used 36 W/B to mow with. I got the calls, but I also got the crappy yards. Now I have it all. 100% ligit and paying for it big time, but its worth it. All I can say is be creative, but don't set yourself up for failure, buy selling you self short, you will never progress. Don't be upset if you loose a bid for being too high. Be upset if you get a job because you are desperate and price too low. Pass your card out all the time. I have gotten business while having a few beers at the local drinking establishments. I have gotten customers at the grocery store. Hustle hustle hustle. How many times have you walked up to a residence and got ready to hang a flyer on the door, and you look over and see three other flyers that have blown off into the bushes? Everyone hands out flyers. Use that time, $$, and effort selling yourself. Get a solicitation permit if needed and actually ring a doorbell when you see a yard YOU would like to take care of. Go get your business don't wait for it to call you.--This is just my experiences and comments. Take it as you wish.

Last year I used "the Dirt Co." in Independence. Very good enriched topsoil. I called around to everyone he was the cheapest by far. He only charged me 40.00 to deliver when gas was close to 3.00 per gallon. I got 16 cu yd delivered to 75th and State Line. It was 458.00 for the soil and delivery. Excellent points Hershey,
Have you tried door to door or cold calling people? Does it work or does it piss more people off than its worth? The reason I ask is I've relocated to a new state and don't have the benefit of word of mouth yet. I'm thinking about leaving flyers in mailboxes for certain yards I think could use the help. Afterall fewer people are angered by junk mail than telemarketing and door to door salesman. However, I'm willing to try anything if it results in new, good business.

Just to let you know its against the law in this country to put things in peoples mailboxes.
My suggestion is invest a couple hundred dollars in door hangars.
Got a customer looking to get back yard sprinker system put in. Small back yard and front yard already has sprinklers. He called someone but have not showed up yet for a bid. Anyone with experience that you know does a good job?
Looking for someone that is all they do.

Make sure you first know your local door to door solicitation laws. All you need to do is call the police station (not 911) ask for the records department and ask them the law for door to door solicitation. In some cities you need to get a permit. I got one for Leawood and it cost me 10.00 and two day wait. It was worth it know that the po po can't f*ck with me while I walk around looking for yards I want to cut. Some cities you don't need a permit (Overland Park). Some cities only allow door hangers and flyer's, but no doorbell ringing. Some don't allow it period. You can get some good business if you ring the bell. But be prepared for every question under the sun. I only "cold call" if I see some one outside, or if I really think I could get the job. Don't try and sell the mowing, but sell something else like fert programs, (allot of people use Ryan. They are very good but the prices are crazy.) clean ups, mulch or even hedge trimming. Then let your work sell its self. People are loyal if you treat them right and do what they ask for. Be personal, confident, and prepared. All in all I find the best way to be direct mailing and word of mouth. If you do a mailing, go take a pic of your best yard, Put it on a post card with your # and the owners number for a reference (hey if your best yard is what you want representing your company then ask the owner if you can use them as a reference. Most people who's yards are the best in the neighborhood, want to show it off and are flattered to want to use them as a reference. 1-100 people want a reference, so they prob won't get many calls. Get out and try door to door. It would be a good way to learn the streets in you new town.
Good Luck and sorry for the rambling just my 2 cents

Where do you get it done?
Who does it?
One of my new client front lawn looks very bad. He said, Tree year ago, Gas was leaking and the gas company came out to replace the underground pipes.
After that, his front lawn was never the same. He tried to reseed every Fall for the last tree years, but has no luck.
I was thinking, getting his soil tested and go From there.
Please give me some input.
Thanks

Local extension center or I use spectrumanalytic.com
The get it done in a day and cost $8 for lawn business. I charge $25 to the customer since it cost about $8 to mail it. Usually it will say you need certain type of lime for kansas City area and maybe Nitrogen or some other need. Get them to do a soil test since you can then sell more since the soil test seems to always says they need something.
Last verticut/seeding job I did I sold an additional $200+- for lime and fertilizing after the soil test came back. My cost for materials was $45.

If you are running Wright Standers right now, you will not be happy with the JD. They have a stamped deck as opposed to the welded steel deck of the Wright. Take a closer look and you will see that the JD is junk.

Yes, after further inspection I totally agree. The price was right, but quality is nothing like Wright. I think I will stay with what works.

Cool. I have a customer that is going to need some boxes moved due to retaining walls that are being put in and she needs another head installed. I have a guy but he's backed up also.
Rain was good last night. From what I saw we should get some more tonight and tommorow with a big cool down. That should help.

Also I am located in Shawnee, but most of my work is North of the River. I am small time, I have 20 accts, and do it all on Saturdays with a two man crew and a sub contractor (this is my side job). Bandbmowing, I agree with you on the everride. I like the way they are designed. The one problem I see is that all the weight is in front of the rear wheels. I don't know how they would do on hills. Hartzler Equipment in Harrisonville carries them.

Royalslover,
I was wondering have you used one or anything? Also did you get a quote from Hartzler? One of the big things besides the weight over the wheels is that they are quoted on Ever Ride's website as weighing 950 lbs, that is about 200 more than great dane and Wright. Not sure how much difference it would make on holding on the ground, but I wonder if it makes them a lot less agile.

Anyone too busy to return new customer calls? I'm looking for lawn and landscape work in the LS, Raytown, Grandview and surounding areas. I'm doing cleanups and mowing. If someone can forward me some customers, I'll treat them well and will try to repay the favor. I always meet customers in person for a few minutes and sell a high percentage of maintenance inquiries. Meeting some of you in person would be great, too! I Think I have a pretty good business. I'm just rebuilding after selling the previous clientel. Been doing this since spring 01'. Thanks

Gopher is the easiest to get used to. If you want something not related directly to lawn care but still does the job try Quick Books but Gopher is the most inexpensive and the IMO the easiest to use. Im no whiz at computers and I picked it up pretty quick.

Does anyone have any leads on good qaulity workers. I have tried everything. It seems that all the unemployed are much happier living off of me instead of working for me. Unemployment must be pretty good this year. I am looking for someone with lawn and / or Landscape experience.
I have tried labor services, kcstar, gone to the Boulevard and picked up there, all with no real luck. The ones that are good workers don't have a car or speak ZERO English. The ones that have transportation are lazy, or show up for one day then get too drunk to show up on time.
Pay will be based on experience starting at 10.00 per hour if you have any, and upto 15.00 if I can trust you with a truck. I only need someone for 20-25 hours a week. If you have anyone you may have layed off, or if anyone is looking for some extra work email me at HHlawn@kc.rr.com and leave contact info and I will call.
