Ok , it's time to change the recoil starter rope on my Sthil BR400. I have the correct replacement on hand, my question is, what kind of nightmare will this be ?, based on some unpleasant experiences with other machinery. I figure I have about 5 to 10 pulls left on the old one. Any help will be appreciated !!!

Its not too bad. 1. Use exactly the same length of rope. 2. correct spring tention may take a few tries. Check to see that rewind spring is not rubbing rope. I had premature failure due to this.

Purchase the entire pull cord assembly...what happens is the cord wraps around a plastic wheel...as the cord wears out, so does this wheel...it begins to crack and split and you'll end up replacing the whole assembly anyway...to replace the assembly, remove the 3 screws that hold it, and replace with the new one, it's that easy...I think it cost around $25.00...I've had my BR400 for 4 years now and that's the only problem I've ever had, I've replace this assembly 4 times...
