View Full Version : New Card for lawn business

03-11-2003, 04:47 PM
OK I have been playing with my new program Photo Shop Deluxe.
This is the first one I have come up with that I like well enough to take a chance on you alls feed back.:D It has been hard for me to keep it simple. I know due to the research I have done on this site that a majority seem to feel simple is best. Colors at least a lot of color is frowned upon. But I really wood like to use the color if I can get away with it. I plan to print them myself so I can just print 50 or so at a time and I haven't figured out the cost but I'M not too worried about that as I am the design for now.
So OK here goes..............what do you think.

03-11-2003, 04:55 PM
Here it is

03-11-2003, 06:22 PM
It didn't paste very clear. Shouldn't it be "leave" your lawn to us?

I think using the word "leaf" was his intention.

03-11-2003, 06:29 PM
BTW, are you really incorporated? You might also want to add in someplace on the card your first and last name to make it look more professional.

It didn't paste well on LS, hope it looks better from your vantage point. I think you should continue experimenting.

03-11-2003, 06:54 PM
Looks great, but i would put "leaf" in quotes so that people dont just think you miss spelled leave

03-11-2003, 07:27 PM
I'm not crazy about it. The mower, which looks like a line drawing doesn't look quite right with the photos of real leaves. I think it would look better if they were the same, either all line drawings, or better yet, all real photos.

And is the name carved in stone already? It doesn't really say "green industry". Scotts Dependable Services Inc. could be any service. Plus it's a little long.

But hey, I'm just nit-pickin' now. Good luck.

03-11-2003, 09:57 PM
i like it alot :)

03-11-2003, 09:58 PM
I think it looks that way because I resized it after exporting it from Photo Shop Deluxe. I'll try again. The name, I have been using sense 1996 and I have been Incorporated sense December of 1998. My wife and I got our start being in business hauling off the drywall scraps from home construction mostly. In the last three years we have expanded into stone, sand dirt, and mulch delivery. I also have farmed my grandfathers place all my life. I have been mowing yards sense I can remember. I mowed 3 acres on my dads place in Hamilton Co. My grandfathers place was in Madison Co. he had seven acres I took care of and there were two neighbor on five acre lots that I ended up doing for four or five years I don't remember the years. HA thats been awhile. I bought a DC last year and have it in my head I would like to take on some lawn care work. I have worked one summer with a large lawn care outfit in the Indianapolis area so combined with my farm back ground I expect I will get by. This site has been a god send as far as necessary info goes. I have read for hours and found just about all the answers a new guy can think of. It's those surprises that I'M oh so not looking forward to.:( LOL
I don't ever intend to only be in the green industry but I want to handle any of my clients in the most professional of ways. This is how my wife and I have always conducted our business and we are very proud of our reputation. Our reputation for quality work has gotten us 90% of all our new client's I have to admit I would have undercharged if I hadn't found this site. Now I have a much better understanding of the professional standard you all try to maintain. Just so you all know I intend to do my part to maintain that standard. Mostly because it pays better LOL :D but I like doing a good job.........na its the money:D :D :D

03-11-2003, 10:04 PM
Oh I forgot gogetter I have to agree with you about the mower looking funny I'LL look for a different one and try again thanks.

ronslawncare..Thanks I'M still not happy with it but so far it has been my best try. You wouldn't want to see some of my first tries:blush: LOL

03-12-2003, 12:29 AM
What do you do? Are you scott? Residential? Commercial? Not enough info for me. plus I like the square mower tires. Just my .02

03-12-2003, 12:56 AM
Should be a comma after Services. Scott's Dependable Services, Inc.. ^ I may be wrong, but I think that your slogan should be in quotes. "Leaf your lawn to us." I would scrap the mower idea completely and put something else like what services you provide.

03-12-2003, 10:34 AM
I would scrap the cheap pic of the mower also. Did you reverse the pic.....look like the discharge chute is on the left side of the mower.

03-12-2003, 03:13 PM
Ok I tried to implement some of the advise given here. As for the name I like it being non descriptive. It leaves the door open for more than one enterprise with out having multiple company names. Now that would be a pita. Scotts is right I think. Scotts being plural in this case. My wife and I make two Scotts. But even if I'M wrong about that it's a registered name at this point. Scotts Dependable Services Incorporated. We are a S-corp.
Yes walkertalker I reversed the picture of the mower. Good Eye.
I just thought it fit better that direction. It's gone now any way. If you guy don't like this version any better I will probable scrap this idea and start over. One thing I would like to mention is the nice thing about designing your own cards is you can always change it or have more than one design for each application or even season. I have a completely different card for my construction clean-up service's for instance. thanks to all for the feed back it helps a lot.:)

03-12-2003, 03:23 PM
I like the new design. It is flashy and grabs your attention. Also I like the mentioning of the services that you offer. I wish I had done that on mine but decided to put a picture of one of my properties as the background(with permission of course).

03-12-2003, 03:28 PM
Woops...forgot to attatch pic.

Ok for some reason the pic is not appearing.

03-12-2003, 03:34 PM
Ok, I will try this one more time. Resized it so that maybe it will post this time.

A few things:

Use colors that contrast. Too many light colors wash out the design. Maybe a hunter green back round. The font should go too. Maybe a Arial Bold or Arial font. Its best not to use too many fonts in a design. One or two is fine. Also to cut costs you can do a two color design. Knock out letters make the design appear as a 3 color design. Why not put Scott's Lawn/Landscape. You want people to know what type of work you do. Not all people know what a ZTR is. You want them to get a basic idea of what you do. You don't want to turn the business card into an ad. A Lawyer never puts everything he does on his card. Just the basics Company name, phone# Fax# address contact name. Trust me I also have a clothing company. We screen print shirts. You would be surprised how you can make things stand out by keeping it simple. Travis

I tweaked it a little this is as good as I can get this one I think. I'm using Andy font I like it but I will try some others. Thanks again for the feed back.

03-12-2003, 04:17 PM
I hate it when I do that. attached wrong file. Here it is.

03-12-2003, 04:25 PM
I like yours it really brings home the old saying a pictures worth a thousand words. Good work.

03-12-2003, 04:57 PM
Hey thanks. I really wasn't sure about putting some of the services that I offer, but I guess that I could just print some of them on the back. What do you all think? Is it worth it printing on the back? I already printed up about 300 but I can add to the next batch. Thanks for the input.

Its looks better. I tried to post an example I did for you but I don't know how to do so. I use Coral Draw #7 and #9. I did this in Word for you. Most people don't have Coral Draw it will run you hundreds of $$$ for it. If you look right on the lawnsite.com page you will see an ad for Magna-Matic. That Ad looks like a two color but its a one color with the letters and design knocked out. Thats what I was talking about before. The Everything Green.com ad has a contrast in colors. The dark green and yellow. The Exmark and Great Dane fonts stand out. The Andy fonts o.k. but if you plan to use it on trucks it will not stand out for a distance. You want it to stand out. Also you want to try and stay away for put down all the things you do on your truck signs. You need the basics Company name # and "maybe"town/State. People will inquire more if interested. Look at The Brickmen Group they do it all. The only word on the trucks Brickmen. Thats when you know you got it made. Keep on working on it I'll try and post some pics

Another try at this. I like this one a lot more. What do you think.

The last one looks great.

maybe put ''references available'' on it? i know all my customers ask for references. putting it right on the card lets them know you are established and are proud of your work, and that you're willing to prove it.

just my $.02

03-15-2003, 10:10 AM
I like the last one. I think you are on the right track. There was just something about the first one. I do like your name on the card as well as specific services you provide.

03-15-2003, 10:24 PM
Do you really want to give out your cell phone to everyone??? I do not give mine out to any residential accounts. I selectively give it to a few property managers of commercial accounts and let them know that they should only use it during snow storms. Other than that, they can leave a message on the office phone & I'll get back to them in a fashionable time.

03-16-2003, 01:11 AM

I understand where your coming from but I have caller ID and an answering service on the cell and besides when I am working I sweat so much I am afraid I'll rune the phone so I leave it in the truck. I just check the missed calls a few times a day and return the calls at my convenience.
This is what I came up with today. I haven't been able to decide if I like the blue sky effect I'M going for. It dose add the contrast that AGG Lawn Maintenance suggested. I'M not sure if this is what he meant though. This one is different. maybe more specific suggestions would help. Heck its just a card maybe I am fretting it to much.LOL.
I'am enjoying this program but I have found some limitations like the panel color effect I wish I could adjust the white blue fade balance on the top panel.
AGG Lawn Maintenance This Coral Draw how much better is it than Photo Shop that I am using do you know? Is it worth that much more money? I spent a little less than a hundred bucks on this one. Thanks to all who have responded. I plan on having a decision on this by the end of the weekend so I can begin the hunt.LOL

Well Coral Draw is used by Screen Printing guys. My brother in-law is a screen printer. He does all the prints for my clothing company.
He and I make the designs in Coral Draw. He's a lot better at it. (18 years experience) Myself I started using Coral about 3 years ago. I'm no pro but I can do some things. what I can't do I draw by hand and take it to him to do through Coral Draw.

I could not do it the way I wanted to. But you get the idea. You want it to be effective ad or business card. You can do it with a light green back round and Really dark green letters etc. I once saw a guy who had a white truck with gold letters on it. That does not work too well. You can not see it. Now on a red truck yes but not white. Both colors are too light. Its good to have a design also. That helps customers identify with your company. Put you logo on everything from your shirts, trucks, letter heads business card etc.

Oh while I'm on a roll, you can even do a water mark design in the back round. Maybe a tree. A water mark design is a design like those found on checks. It is kinda faded. You can type right over it if you want. It gives your deign a nice effect.

Looks good but if I wanted to call you I would need the last four numbers.

03-23-2003, 02:17 AM
Hey Your cards look good, and what are the odds of having 2 business owner names on this site, cause I'm guessing your name is Randy Scott, well theirs a user on here that his name is Randy scott too that I know who lives near me.
I just got my new business cards $50 for 500 cards, green tree with black lettering, raised lettering too.

03-23-2003, 08:10 PM
leadarrows....The last one is too busy....way too many colors. Also, I personally do not like the "Leaf you Lawn to Us" logo.....sounds like a pun my 3 year old son would make.

I think "Leave" Your Lawn to Us" is a lot more subtle, and makes more sense.

03-23-2003, 10:33 PM
Three years old huh? Ouch that hurts. Probably true but ouch anyway. LOL Ok I appreciate every ones opinions and my wife hates them all so its back to the drawing board. My wife thinks I should go with black and white with standard text. Nothing fancy. That sure takes the fun out of it but enough of you seem to agree with her so I will try something else. I guess the fancy ones will have to go on the back burner for a while I need something to hand out starting last week. My clean up service brings me into contact with the home owners even before they have moved in. I want to introduce myself and be ready to tell them about my lawn services. I can't imagine a better opportunity then when there standing there telling you what a good job you did cleaning there house. I meet the builders and the developers from time to time and it is an opportunity that I have been missing. I hope to rectify that starting this year. The wife hates this one as well but what the heck what do you all think of it?
I have met two other Randy Scott's in my life and there is one in my locale phone book that I have never met but my daughter had him as a land lord for awhile. Small world... maybe? But I think a lot of women my moms age just loved Randolph Scott. LOL

03-23-2003, 10:39 PM
The fully insured water mark shows up a lot more here on this form then it does on paper. I guess for now I will just put basic info on a card and go with that. How boring!! Oh well we have started to pick up some more work and I hope I will be to busy to worry about this anyway. Thanks for all the responses and I hope every one has a good year.

03-23-2003, 10:47 PM
With out the water mark.

03-27-2003, 10:15 PM
Last post on this I promise. I just wanted to post what I finally decided on. At least for now. :D
Thanks again for all the help.
