hey daughtry

gators work good even with side discharge. been using a couple of years. the highlift blades were sucking up all the topsoil. may have to slow down a little in the tall stuff. doesnt do much in the way of "mulching" so you have to make a couple passes.:weightlifter:

Thanks, I use a high lift and cut most accounts every 10 and im thinking the gators will help with the grass clippings. Also I cut a cem and am thinking this will also help with clippings. How do they do in the early morning (dew)??

Wondering if anyone out there could help me find a wholesale stone company. I did searches on the internet that didn't seem to help me. I am looking for a stone wholesaler (possibly a quarry) that wholesales larger riverstone (5-8", 8" & bigger). The color is white/grey with black pock marks (sort of salt'n'pepper look). Does anybody know the company and/or contact info?

Thanx, -Gary Hoffman

Hello LawnSite! Long time reader, first time poster. I am in the Raleigh area. Been looking for employment since September. Seems I used up some luck earlier on, and now someone wants their payment! Anyhow, I've been landscaping for over 17 years, and been a Branch Manager, Operations Manager and Production Manager, mostly focusing on Installations. I've even been looking in other states, but I think everyone is waiting until after the new year. I have even considered going into consulting, and offer first time applicants a free consult. Then, by expanding by word of mouth, slowly start to charge. I have surfed the web for consultants, and they always seem "distant", and only marketing towards the $5 million and larger companies. I would like to focus on the smaller, single owner companies, and share my experience gained from my previous large employers. And if somone has a system that works, why not share it witrh others. Obviously, in other areas and towns, so as not to make everyone in the same area too equal. If anyone has any thoughts on this, or if you have a position open or will be opening, I'd like to talk. Thanks for everyone's time.

Steve

How bad is the weather down there in the winter. IS it still warm enough to do hardscapes? Does the ground freeze? How many weeks of mowing do you get?
Im wanting to get away from the new york snow, and be able to work most of the year if not all of it? I can take a couple small snowfalls a year, but thats it.

NC has a very wide range of climate actually.
Beaches to the mountains....

So it really depends on where you go in NC.

In general though, in my opinion we are in a really mild winter trend. Have been for a long time. But still it's like 17 degrees here right now. It comes in cycles though with the weather patterns. It will be mild, then turn bitter for a little while.

But even in the elevations, it's not like it would be in western NY. As the trend has been, only the high elevations see much snow and/or extended periods of deep ground freezing.

I operated in the foothills to the mountains... mowing seasons could vary as much as 3 months sometimes from year to year... like with a late spring and an early freeze. I've seen it start into May and end early on October. But many years I've seen it start in March and run until Christmas. Many years I hardly had time to turn around from one season to the next, using those off weeks to do the books/taxes and work the renewals, etc...

The handicap with moving from NY to NC is the economic gap and the population density gap that exists. It's a totally different market down here. Way poorer and way farther spread out.

I reside in Louisburg which is very close to Zebulon and I think you'll like it. I think the market will come around towards the end of the yr which will in turn give you ample time to at least get your foot in the door so to speak.

Hey guys I'll be moving a tree to Lake Norman here in a couple of weeks and will need somewhere to drop a plug. It's our 90" spade so we're talking a piece of dirt that's about a 6'x6' cone. Anyone know of somewhere I can drop it? Its a bit of a haul for me (2hrs) so I don't want to make 2 trips. Thanks!

Well usually towards the end of the year things slow down. We're keeping busy on the whole... Will actually be in your region hopefully stating tomorrow for a couple of weeks.... patio/landscape/irrigation. Have a driveway to rip up and redo and maybe a commercial thing. Also a little tree moving thing with the zoo, but I'm really hoping for a uptick in the spring. I'm just glad we're built to travel because there isn't much going on here locally (as usual)

Ok the wake this thread up... I have some potential work for someone. We did a pretty nice install over the winter to a home in the Alamance crossing area in Burlington, NC area. I stopped by last week to crank up the sprinks and fountain and just happened to be there when the "maintenance" guy was mowing. Now granted this is bermuda, and still quite dormant, but the HO told me it'd been mowed once already. But to make a story short there is not much grass, maybe 2000'sq. But it is going to look nice, I do afterall do a bang up job. The gent was mowing it with a 62" grasshopper SD... I was furious, I've calmed down a bit. I would like to give the HO a list of people in the area that mow, and mow preferable w/ a bagger or mulcher and I personally don't think anything bigger than 42" needs to be on this lawn. If you're interested please PM me name/email/website/phone. I'll forward to the HO. If you're not committed to making me look good than please don't PM me. I love installing in the area but its too far for our maintenance crew to service so help me out. Sleepyhead, you might have a name you'd drop since you used to be in the area?

Wow... someone is being overly efficient... big deal.

And if it's bermuda... even bigger deal.

You can't really hurt the stuff... hell it's hard to kill when you are deliberately trying...

Not everything needs to be bagged with a 21" mower.

BrandonV

I'm all for 60" mowers.... but not on 60" grass strips. He was blowing grass all up in my beds, makes me made.

I can see the thing on not blowing bermuda in the beds.

It's not a strong idea to install and maintain landscapes where you don't maintain the turf.
Or have a sub that does it at least.

BrandonV

are you suggesting that I only work where I maintain? I'm a installer first, we travel from Martinsville to Myrtle Beach. We do a very small amount of maintenance in our local area. Dollar wise maintenance isn't 12% of my income.

Brandon, I travel throughout NC for business too. I mainly do tractor work such as bushhogging cell towers and Air ports lots. We also have a boom mower for the hard to reach areas such as storm ponds etc. If you need my services, I would be willing to travel.

Why do I always forget about this part of LS??

As I said in the lighting forum, things are great right now for me.. All I need now, are a few large lighting jobs to make this a super great year..

Anyone here doing any misting systems?

For February we're suprisingly busy with repairwork & alterations to systems.

We're also starting back with installations as of this week.

And starting a large scale apt. complex installation on Feb 21st. which will take about 4 weeks of install time.
