What condition is your lawn in? If it is like most of the lawns in the Midwest it was probably affected by the drought. You could run a dethatcher through the lawn to loosen and remove the dead grass. Then core aerate, overseed and fertilize. Otherwise, right now is time to put down pre-emergence. In May, a weed/feed. Late June, grub control. Early fall, a fall renovator. November, winterizer.

thanks for the reply Lombardi,
the grass is in fairly good shape, I kept it watered last summer.
what type of fertilizer do you suggest?

Right now is the time to put on pre-emergence which has fertilizer in it. If there is a Lesco dealer nearby, stop in and talk with them or you can use Scotts.

2/3 % nitrogen in fall
use pre emerge with low n and high k or high n and k but high % controLLed slow release nitrogen (CSRN)
spot treat for broadleafs
be sensitive to evironment, don't treat for grubs unless a real bad problem
Fall best time to treat for broadleafs.
want quality natural organic fert for all applications except pre emerge, look at espoma www.espoma.com , I think espoma use 4 applications, not to bad for homeowner.
