Whats up all?! Pascagoula, Ms here. I currently do only residential accounts. This is my second year of business. Was able to purchase all new equiptment last year with profits. This year is allready starting off good. I hope to again double my accounts. I currently only have 14 accounts with most being on a bi-weekly scheldue at $35-$40 each. Good thing is they are all within walking distance are (riding mower distance) from my house. Well I hope all you Mississippi guys are staying super busy. Good Luck!! and look forward to reading your replys. See ya!!!!!

Hello All,

I am from Mize, MS originally and have wound up in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. I am currently working in the corporate theater business (big words for "I do video projectors") and am looking for a way back into the sunshine and a slower pace. A couple of weeks ago, I did 48 hrs OT on salary and the new boss just checked everyone's pockets for cell phones. This guy is a real daisy! Any advice you guys can give that will help me escape to the great outdoors will be appreciated.

The LCO market here in S. FL is quite competitive, but I have noticed that the quality sucks in a lot of instances. The guy who was doing my lawn (~6k ft2 lot size) was charging 16.00 / cut. He does about six houses in a row and his three man crew can do the set in about an hour. Most of teh lot sizes here are in the 6-10k ft2 range. The newer lots are on the lower end of this and have 3-4k ft2 houses on them. The newer ones all have a double drive and garage and cost at least $250k, more likely $400k-$500k. There is not a lot of grass. My guess is that I can do one by myself in less than 30 mins using a 21" commercial WB. A 32" would make it faster. 36" is too wide for the gates.

Labor rates can run from min wage to $10/hr depending on the skill set.

I am thinking of starting part-time solo until I get completely fed up with middle management at my current job. If I time it right, I can get through the slow season next winter before I quit, or am invited to exit gracefully.

Realizing that the market at home is quite different from down here, what can you tell me that might help an old boy out?

thanks,
bob

Live in Ellisville

I do lawn work in Ellisville area part time, three residential two commercial. I have a full time job in Hattiesburg that I enjoy and can retire from in about seven years and then maybe go full time lawn bus. I could really use some more work this year.

If you can refer me I would appreciate it.

Welcome to the site, if you are new, even if you are not, you will learn alot on here. I finally started parttime this year, got 9 weekly accounts and let my add run out. Trying to let things settle down a bit, and deal with all the side jobs I have lined up, OK, its only 3 left, but still.
I am hoping to go full time by next spring, I am really loving this new business venture. I really enjoy making lawns look nice, making customers happy with envious neighbors, and making some extra money to boot.

I am in Brandon, MS, in the Jackson area, if I can help you with anything, let me know, I will do my best.

So how is the cleanup/rebuild going down there? I have only been to Biloxi/Gulfport twice, once the week after, I got to drive down what was left of 90, then another trip in November while contemplating a business venture down there.

Good luck and make some good money!

Thats the understatment of the year. even as far north as us (ellisville just north of Hattiesburg) it was really bad. We took a trip down the week after to take some friends some supplies in gulfport. Glad they are north of I 10 but still took us forever to clear the trees up. Never used a chainsaw so much in my life as I have in the past 6 mo.

Any of yall on the coast are welcome here if another one comes this year.

Im offering big incentives for lighting refferals from jackson to GPT. Contact me thru my website in my signature

Slawn,

Im in Brandon, a part-timer, dont have anything I can throw your way,
its been too dry lately up here.
I only have 11 accounts right now, but two of them had gone 4 weeks
since last mowing. They are every other week normally. Glad we finally
got a couple of storms come through, but still need more rain.
If I find something I cant handle, I will let you know.

Thanks Madstriper.
We're dried up too, we did get a shower friday but all it did was settle the dust a little. I mow mostly rural yards and have been wanting to get in a subdivision some where. I know Brandon has a lot of new subdivisions going up, but its hard to break into one. I've been helping a guy do some landscaping, we've done a job or two around the reservoir, and some at Byram. He dosen't do any mowing just landscape, but I think I would like to have enough yards to mow full time. If you can help in anyway I would appreciate it, also if I can help you let me know.

I am slowly building my business, I started April of this year, ran an small 30 day ad in the Clarion-Ledger,
and got about a dozen calls. I now have 12 accounts, mostly weekly, and I usually pick up a side job every week or two.
I turned down 4 jobs in the resevoir(sp?) area over about 3 week period, just because they were out of my small service area. When I go full time, I would love to have them, its just not worth it due to travel time and fuel expense. I work full time as a dept supervisor at Home Cheapo for now, so I try to keep my route within a small area.
The ad worked for me, I did hit a few subdivisions with some flyers but didnt get but a call or two from that.
I am really suprised at the money you can make just picking up side jobs weeding flower beds!!!!
Good luck, keep in touch, and pray for rain!!!!

Its getting pretty bad here, I also run a few cattle and sell hay. I've only gotten one cutting of hay so far and its looking like thats going to be it. I mow mostly rural yards and they are dried up. I'm praying for rain, I guess it will rain one day. I also ran a ad in the clarion ledger back in the spring, man the clarion ledger is high on their ads. I got a call or two for some shurd trimming and cleanup's but no mowing jobs.
What kind of mower do you have Madstriper? I'm running a 52" exmark ztr.
good luck!
