I'm actually from Brookings SD , but we are so close that its about like living in Minn except I don't pay taxes there. We get most of our supplies from Minn wholesalers, and I spend a lot of time in the state. I have two daughters in the Twin Cities

Add us to the list. We are in Buffalo, Griffith's Total Lawn Care. Next summer is our second season in lawn care. Right now, we are just waiting for snow, so we can do some plowing.

Haven't seen this sight in a while....

1acreplus

I've been plowing snow for 4 years in the Twin Cities, but it's getting a little lean lately - about 30% of my customers are contract, the rest are per-push. With less than an inch of snow so far in January, things are looking pretty grim on the balance sheet.

I'm new to the lawncare biz, and figured I would focus on an area where there isn't a whole lot of competition in the Twin Cities - acreage mowing.

Since I already own two tractors, acreage mowing was a minimal investment for me. I've got a JD 850 utility tractor with an 84" 3-point deck and a smaller articulated tractor with no deck yet, but I'm thinking about a 72" or 84" for it. Both tractors are 25hp (net @ PTO) Yanmar diesels. I've also got a 26" WB for trimming, I'll probably get another WB and have one on each trailer.

I'd be happy to trade job leads or subcontract with guys that do smaller or tight-fit jobs. I know there are big jobs (meant for 84" decks) and there are jobs better left to Z's.

Since I don't have a fert license, I'd also like to find a licensed fert applicator to subcontract for me.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Springchick,
I know of one customer that was being charged $238 per app. on about a 3/4 acre lot. I thought that seemed high but I'm new to the area. I plan on getting my pest/herb license for next season and do some ferts. What are you finding in the Grand Rapids area? Do any mowing? What's the going rate over there?

David,

I am in the market for a 16 foot trailer, I am selling my 12ft. it's a very heavy duty nice looking steel trailer with a 4 ft drop down ramp. it's got a 5K LB axel on it. with 2 ft steel sides, new treated plywood inside.
As far as Leaf clean ups it's all on what type of equipment you have. If you have a large vac and a dumper, you can charge a bit more and take you less time? I have a been questimating and trying to stay with in around $75 an hour for clean ups. it's been working pretty well.

Hi Erik

Nice to meet people that are in the same area of interest. Thank you for your response. I am currently finishing up my AA. I have not totally decided on what to major in yet but I have narrowed it down into two fields. Law enforcement on the Federal level, or business( which would apply greatly to my small lawn service). As for the help with the trailers (THANKS) what are the names of the dealerships and where exactly are they. Finally, what do you think the would be a better size 6x12 or 6x16. I currently own a 48 inch Lesco walk behind and just today bought a new 36 inch walk behind. I would like to down the road if i get large enough buy a 62 inch zero turn but that is only if i acquire the larger accounts

As i aked Erick above and maybe you would know too, with the equipment i have would a 6x12 foot trailer sufice or would i latter on down the road be undersizing my self like i did with the 5x8. But anyway how much are you asking for your trailer?.
In response to my leaf system i have a trac- vac attached to my 48 inch mower. The kind with a can to dump with, and being in the cities I useally have to haul the leaves away to the local composte site.

The kind with a can to dump with, and being in the cities I usually have to haul the leaves away to the local composite site. I work by my self and for the most part I charge $60 an hour. Usual yard goes for $120. The reason i ask is I was about fifteen clients into the leaf season and with no problems when i came to give my 16th client the bill and she fired me on the spot. The bill was about $160. I had been to her yard twice. Being my fist season it was a real hard blow to my confidence about what to charge. Thanks for your response.

I got my trailer at a Brinkmans out in Oreano MN. They wanted to get some trailers off their lots before it snowed. I really didn't look at any other trailers there but just do a search on-line and you could find the number. But, I do know a place off Highway 8 just a couple of miles into Wisconsin that did have a dump trailer and are having a clearance sale going on. "World cargo" is the name of the place but the guy who owns the place sounds like he is 15 years old. If you call him you have to leave like 3 messages before he gets back to you. Oh ya both had 16 footers.

This is the corporate headquarters. In the Minnesota market we are investing over $200,000.00 in advertising this season and as with each market we move into, end up becoming the Green Industry Resource for all services.

The work that we do not offer needs to be carefully placed with those who can get the work completed with exceptional quality.

If you wish to pursue further PM me and we can set up a time to get together to discuss.

Our desire is to direct that work to contractors in the area that can get it done as a sub contractor to us.

I was thinking about working for someone else 4 days and giving myself a few for jobs. Have no clue yet, really but i am definitly ready to do something and getting more anxious by the minute. Well, anyway just wanted to say hello and announce my presence here in the north burbs of mpls..

Welcome!

Thanks, I would prefer to build up the landscaping side more but I will most likely mow too. I really haven't done much with chemicals so I don't think I'm going to get involved with them.

If I would have scrolled down a bit, I would be in the right place.

I'm in Anoka County.
I need some help on materials, and employees.
Where do you guys sell, buy, or steal [JK] materials from?

I need clay and black dirt, and other landscape materials...and that's just for starters.

I mow, do landscaping, and have a MN DOAG applicators license.

I don't have anything in Rochester, but keep my email for later this winter and check back. The other place that I used to get a little business was Craig's list.
If you're not familiar with it, in Minneapolis, the web address is minneapolis.craigslist.org. The advertising is free, and I got free business for 5 minutes work. I've sold equipment there, helped to get another business started, and even talked to lawn care businesses for sale on that site.
I'm not sure if Rochester has their own, but it's worth a shot. You might not get much this fall, but I'm positive you'll get leads in March and April. What you'll want to do is to put a new advertisement in at least once a week. You're only supposed to run one ad per service at a time, so maybe delete out the previous week's ad. The fresh ads will bring more leads.
Email me if you need any other help.

I attended the Green Expo a couple weeks ago. My first time attending. Good show if you like 'stuff', but I was hoping to network a bit more and not just browse things to buy. Show didn't seem to have a lot of variety of vendors. Would I go back, possibly, only because its winter in MN, what else does is a lawn guy going to do that time of year:)

I have posted this before but will post again as we draw nearer to Spring. I am looking to grow my biz this year from 1st season last yr - looking for mow/blow/trim work primarily residential in the Rochester area. 3/4 acre mowable or less - no huge lots I exclusively will use a WB mower this coming season. I do not do chems and would definitely be willing to refer this work to you if you have a top notch fert/squirt biz. Thanks kindly!

02-20-2008, 12:05 PM
I am looking to subcontract portions of work on several prospective sites this spring in the Minneapolis Suburbs. These are large acreage sites of 8-14 acres each

Specifically, I'm looking for someone with large equipment such as a pelican or truck mounted unit, who can do the lot sweeping only.

A. We will blow curbs and do all prep.
B. Each site is a two-day event, per customer.
C. I need pricing ASAP on a per square foot/acre basis in two ways
1. Price for dump-on site
2. Price with hauling/disposal.

This work totals 30-40 acres of moderate/heavy sanded pavement. Lots are googled down to the square foot. We are seeking to start a long-term relationship with a quality sweeping contractor. Need information quickly.

PM me -Thanks.

I have a snapper 36 with a brand new Kawasaki 12 HP just installed 2 years ago. It probably has 8 hours on it. we never use it. it sits in the shop. It's got a bagger, Mulch plate and extra belts. I hate to sell it, starts on first pull everytime. ....don't use it. I obviously have way more in to it than it's worth. New engine from WGLC alone was $1100 professionionally installed. I'd take $950 for someone who's interested in a strong running machine.

Hey...any Viking fans out there? :waving:

The Vikes have an awesome offense w/ resurgent Favre, but our Bengals are playing excellant on the road this year with a record of 4-1 & have the NFL's 4th ranked defense, allowing an avg of only 82 yds / game rushing & 212 passing.

I'll bet that loss Sunday night against Arizona had to have hurt a little.
But that, & the Pittsburgh loss earlier both serve as sort of "how to" videos for Cincy this week:
Bend but don't break on defense; allow field goals but not touchdowns.
And when Bengals get the ball, run, run, run the ball down their throats & eat lots o' clock while beating the MN defense to total exhaustion. :cool2:

Any way you look at it....it will be an awesome game!

I talked to a couple lco's around here and they plan on starting around the first of April. I seen a few cities already blowing out beds and what not.

My contracts don't go into effect until the 15th but if the weather stays good and the ground is good I'll get an early start on the accounts that already renewed. Still waiting on a handful to send contracts back and a few new places I bid, so I'm optimistic for a decent season.

What's the season looking like for everyone else?

3 weeks ago, with 18" of snow on the ground, looked like a late spring.
Now, looks like an average to a bit earlier spring....amazing what a few days in the 50's can do.

I plan to start 15-20th of April probably - but I have a small operation and can afford to start later unlike the big guys. Watching soil temps though. Gets up in the 45-50 range, time to get er down.

Epic - lawns are still pretty fully dormant here. Is it ok to start dethatching/poweraking lawns at this pt? Or better to wait until you start to see some green up?

That is when we normally start, while the grass is dry and not growning. Generally speaking, people that dethatching or raking done want it to take care of the snow mold and to take care of the "matted down" look. I don't think that I have ever went to bid for dethatching and had a person tell me that they have dug up a portion of thier lawn, looked at it, and seen it needing to get rid of the crossed grass or roots. Most of the time you go and meet with the homeowner, or talk to them on the phone and they tell you something like "I've never had it done before", or " it looks prettymatted down right now".

Sorry, kind of long but hopefully that answers your question.
