Hi Everyone,

I am a newbee here in the denton area. I'm 3 weeks in, have been doing the door to door flyers. Droped 500 have goten 5 weekly customers and 2 commerical bids. Going from being a geek setting at a desk all day I am loving this work its nice to be outside again.

I work solo and have a 22" toro self pace. Any idea how many lawns i can do before eather meor the mower drops dead?

Thanks,

You might drop dead before the mower does. Just wait till that heat hits :). That Toro will last you a good 2 or 3 years.

Another newbie in Denton.
I got tired of selling someone elses products and keeping the smaller portion of the profits. I had a LCO 20 years ago and man have things changed.
We have decided to let our advertising decide the areas we will focus on.
Would accept any input for advise on advertising.
Thanks,

How are y'all dealing with the rain? We got out and took care of 2 today, but the quality was poor so I called it a day. Looks like it may be too wet tomorrow as well. How are y'all coping with this weather?

I was considering pushing my Tuesday lawns that didn't get serviced to next Monday, giving me the rest of the week to finish Wed, Thurs, and Fri lawns. Has anyone done the "skip week" to avoid messing up the weekly schedule?

Hope all is enjoying the days off, and getting rest for catch up when it all dries! Best of luck to all!

Well if I get to mow tomorrow I am going to run 2 guys instead of one. Hope to get about 26 lawns done tomorrow and 26 on Friday.

I also would like to know what everyone else is doing. I am like in vacation mode here. I can't imagine what it is going to be like tomorrow.

I'm really under the gun. I'll have lots of catching up to do and trying to get ahead of schedule before next week. I won a trip to Grand Cayman and leave next Wednesday. It'll be a good time to get unstressed after all of this rain. I'm happy we're getting rain though, I remember too well how dry the Summer can get. Good luck all!

Is everyone doing all right? It has been a while since anyone brought an issue to the table, I guess we are all too busy to get on this board from time to time.

I just had to replace an engine on my 36" WB. I learned a lot from that experience. It wasn't too hard, but it was pretty messy.

Hope things are goin well for all, and try to stay hydrated during these hot times.

I sent an e-mail to the Texas Dept of Agriculture asking about a license to fertilize yards for people I mow for. The reply I received is that if you buy a Fertilizer from a retailer (i.e. walmart, homedepot, etc.) there is no license necessary.

I need some help..
Put a spray on weed killer (hose end) on my yard ..
bad results --- still have weeds , but now i have some dead spots
in the lawn.. a lot of it looks burned up (very dry) but water often what can i put on to help jump start it again. yard was fert. about 6 wks ago..

Woody82986
07-14-2004, 11:25 PM
ggg, Was the weed killer you used recommended for your grass type? If it was not recommended for your specific grass type it could have burned the lawn.
ssroseberry, If all you are spreading is fertilizer with absolutely no pesticides or herbicides then yes you are right. You do not need a license. If the fertilizer you are using contains herbicides you must get a license.

Putting a weed spray on your lawn this time of year will yellow the grass around the area. It is very hot and the grass will burn.

I am not sure why the weeds did not die, were they listed on the label of the weed spray?

ggg
07-15-2004, 12:46 PM
Yes, they were listed.. should i fert.the yard again and just keep the water going?

Longstar

the fert will help some, but it will be yellow for a while especially with the temps where they are and no rain relief.

I have a question.

I have enough yards for me and my mexican guy to work Tuesday through Friday. But after last week with all the heat I decided to hire 2 guys. One to weedeat and one to mow. I decided I just can't take the heat as well as I used to.

So, I have to mexican guys doing all the work and I just kinda help out here and there and the rest of the time sit in my hot truck.

Question: How do you find someone preferably hispanic who has a drivers license and can take the truck and do the work like I see so many other companies doing?

So, how is everyone doing right now? I think it would be good to get an update from everyone.

1. How many lawns?
2. Area's you work in
3. How many employees (day laborer's)
4. Hours a week you work
5. Amount of lawns you do a day
6. When do you think the mowing season will come to an end based on all the rain that has occured this year.

You can elaberate more on less of each just thought it might kinda get us back into some conversation on here.

Hey Jason,

I've been fighting a bad case of strep. I still don't know where it came from. The Doctor said that many people carry it and pass it to others without showing the signs or symptons.

Work was pretty good until I got sick, I'm going to try to get back to work tomorrow if I've lost my fever. My wife called my customers and filled them in. I'll be busier for awhile, but I'm going to sell some rye jobs for next month to stay busy for the Winter. Not really answering your questions, but checking in just the same.

outrunjason
08-24-2004, 05:52 PM
Strep does not sound good. I don't know I think I would probably have to work anyway. This seems like a really short season hard to believe that it is time to start pushing the RYE grass.

Good idea Jason...but you didn't answer the questions!

We have 40 +- 5 lawns a week. We cut 4 days a week, and do landscaping, mulching, pruning, etc... on the 5 and 6 day.

My shop is in Southlake. I have accounts in Southlake, Grapevine, and some in Flower Mound (getting out of Flower Mound next season).

This is my first season, and I have one employee that works with me every day. I started working him as "day labor" as I was trying out guys. He is now a legitimate employee.

We work 36 to 45 hours a week....can get all the mowing done in 32 hrs or less.

I am not sure how many more cuts we will get this year. I am assuming 10 more???? 4 in September, 4 in October, and maybe 2 in November???? Any help with this from those with experience would be appreciated!

Hope more reply. I enjoy the "DFW Section"!

outrunjason
08-24-2004, 06:55 PM
LOL I was going to answer my own questions but ended up having to leave so I just posted it.

1. How many lawns? 80 - 85 not sure
2. Area's you work in Far North Dallas, Garland, Richardson Plano
3. How many employees (day laborer's) 1 emp all the time and then some times 2 when work load picks up.
4. Hours a week you work 40 - 45 including hours at home with billing and other stuff
5. Amount of lawns you do a day 16 a day Tue - Fri
6. When do you think the mowing season will come to an end based on all the rain that has occured this year. This is a question I hate to think about. I am guessing with the rain this year it will be longer than normal. I am thinking the last day in September would be the last real scheduled mowing. Then after that it would be Rye, Fall clean-ups, and maybe an occasional mowing during November for some of the lawns that may have some minimal growth.

Jason

We have 18 full time service yards. (commercial/residential mix)
Work in Allen, Plano, North Richardson, Mckinney, and Fairview
Have 1 employee along with me
We do installs and full service maintenance
average about 40 hours a week
I expect mowing season to extend through October with regular mowings ending sometime toward the end of October. Rye will be put down in mid-October on the few lawns that we do.

I got mine (same size) from Hawn Freeway Trailer. See them at http://www.hitchemup.com/landscape.htm . I also checked out Big Tex and a few others, and found Hawn Trailer to be competitively priced.

I have been VERY happy w/ mine, and plan buy another when needed. Check out the water cooler rack (it is built inside the trailer with access from the outside), and I love the shovel and gas tank racks too.

Ask for Mark, he was very helpfull. They also installed 2 brake controlers for me.

We use Lesco Perennial Rye for our overseeding lawns.

That price for a 50lb bag must be for annual rye grass. Perennial is usually somewhere in the $60-70 range.

ps i stay in Haltom City and am hitting up keller, hurst, bedford, North richland hills, and colleyville

Nope, just a good work ethic. The only permit is for applying chemicals (pesticides, fertilizer, weed killers, etc).

We are in the Plano area and our season starts the 2nd week in March & ends the 2nd week of November. 36 weeks. Some customers will let you mow weekly for 36 weeks, some is OK with the 1st & last 6 weeks bi-weekly & weekly in the middle (30 Mows) and the real cheap people start In April & quit in Oct.

i figured out that it's kind of hard to get specific with contracts. so i think that i'm just gonna take em as they come at me.

Hello All,

New to the forum but wanted to say hello and thanks for all the great information I have found.

My husband and I started our company in March of 2004. We mainly only provide fertilization and pesticide services for commercial and residential but have also done some mowing and small landscape projects for our customers as well. We are located right outside of the Mesquite area, but we have not been at all selective of a certain location to concentrate our sales efforts. We have customers from North Richland Hills to Mesquite and in peak season when we are doing a lot of sub-contract work we are often in a different part of the metroplex every day of the week. I know driving 45 minutes to do a customer cuts into the profits but right now we are trying to grow and will drive anywhere within reason …besides I have gotten quite good at routing :)

I was pleased with our first year. We ended the season with a major sub-contract partner, 10 monthly customers and our first big commercial client.

Right now we are gearing up for a new season with hopes of tripling last years totals. We started our premium round one treatment this month and plan to start passing out flyers this week.

Because we do not have mowing equipment other than a lawn mower/weed eater we often pass along or pass over mowing jobs. I would be interested in hearing from those in my area that I could refer these types of jobs too. Also if anyone has need of a licensed and insured certified applicator we offer sub-contract rates and as I stated above will drive almost anywhere in the DFW Metroplex.

Thanks for reading :)

Thanks for your response :)

My husband is the green expert working in the industry for over 15 years. I on the other hand have so much to learn. I am excitedly soaking it all in and putting what I have learned and my marketing back ground to good use and through sub-contracting have figured out a way that you can offer your customers the services we provide and make a little profit at it as well.

I will put an email together this afternoon with our contact information and further explanation of my idea.

Hope the day goes well for all :)

Hey Texans!!

Great site! :blob3: I'm just starting out in the Allen & Plano areas and was wondering if anyone else works in these areas. I'm going to do lawns part-time this year with some side landscaping jobs. I figure I need to keep my current desk job until I can get enough to say "take this job and shove it" to my boss.
I started with a 6 month old home in Fairview (on 2 ac) last Oct that had a crappy builder landscape package. The owner is a friend of mine and was kind to start me off. We will be going back this month to finish the screen(50-60 Photenias) around the pool. By doing this job, I have 3 others wanting me to redo their homes in the same area. Best way to advertise.

Check these pics.

Longstar,

How long have you been in these areas? Landscape or lawn care or both? Are you getting $25 for a basic yard? Trying to get a better feel for the area and what the going rate is. I did a few yards last season and charged $25. I just don't want to undercut the norm.

Thanks for any info.

TXCAMPER, A lot of my properties are larger than normal lawns, but the going rate for a normal lawn would be about $25-$30.

I've been in this area for about 3 years now. We so mostly maintenance, but a few install jobs are not out of the ordinary. I usually sub these out to a friend of mine who owns a nursery.

It's not really a capture. It has been a lifelong dream to fly fighters for the Air Force and was finally selected to do so.

Anyways, I don't think I'm going part out the equipment. The equipment I have is used in the maintenance of the 120 or so customers I have and is needed for just that. I am at this point looking to sell the business as a whole. Thanks.

Do, you have good luck with the Yellow pages? Isn't like a small ad about $600 or more? I was thinking about using yellow pages a few years back but if I was right they told me that I had to have a business phone with them to advertise. I think she was trying to get a sale or something.

I think they do well for me. We have not done any real measurements on how many leads or revenue have come in from the yellow pages but many people that do call will tell us that they have found us in the yellow pages. i had one guy the other day call and tell me that he was looking for an honest guy that can do landscaping so he checked the yellow pages.

It is quite expensive. Right now, we have a half page ad. You need to look at your competition and figure out who they are and who you want to be and then place your ad right next to their ad in the yellow pages.

I used Reed Distributing, out of Fort Worth. I am not sure if I liked them or not though. The management was professional. I feel pretty sure they did put out all of my door hangers I paid them for, and in the correct areas (I drove around and checked). I did get 4 calls from potential customers that were angry at me for hiring "bozos" for putting out my door hangers. One lady even claimed that one guy was peeing in her bushes. Who knows if this really went on. I expeced a few of these calls as I had them putting out 18K door hangers The cost was $.10 per piece.

I'm concentrating on a 3 mile radius around my home in Lewisville. The 3 mile radius includes southern Lewisville, eastern Flower Mound and northern Coppell.

Just started out this January. Right now, I have 15 customers. 11 weekly mowing customers and another 4 who only take fertilization/weed control. Hoping to finish up next November with a lot more than that.

I see a ton of competition in my area. When I see another LCO with a name on the side of the truck, I write down the name. So far, I've counted 33 LCO's in my area that compete with me. There must be another 33 LCO's who don't even have a name for their business. Not even a magnetic sign on the side of the truck or a simple sign on the trailer.

Right now (April 6th) when I'm passing out flyers, I am noticing a ton of business cards from guys with no real business name, just their personal name. All are hispanic. I have a feeling these guys are pricing their mowing services really low.

Anyone have a feel for how cheap these guys are? I've thought about calling them out to my home to see how broken their english is or how cheap they are. I'm sure the presentation to the customer is terrible. I'm just curious to see how they price and present themselves.

Does anyone get the feeling that there may be too many folks in this business right now?

Later,
DFW, TX

I know for a fact that some of these guys are cutting for 15-20 a yard and most of the time they stick to 25-30 once they get their foot in the door so to speak. They are definetly working for less.
A while back I bid on a property that was very large, for a homeowner association. Long story short....my original estimate was 49,000 and some change. But I had an inside connection to the job who was on the board so I adjusted my price down to 38,000 because of the inside info. They were cheap and I was hungry for the work then,lol... A hispanic crew came in and bid 33,000 and won the job. I know for a fact that they are using illegals, but they had the insurance and a few refrences. I suppose they were just working to work or they were doing what most do....send their money back to mexico.

I probably didn't want that job anyway looking back, but there is some stiff competition down this way.

I too am in the same areas as longjohn. There is a lotta grass to mow. Plenty of grass, quality customers are my target but yes, it is important to be able to route effectively. I wouldnt have any problems with redirecting calls that are out of my area. I get calls for south Fort Worth and some areas I have seen you guys from here. I would like to have folks to refer to. I would much rather benefit folks I know.

I know Paul of Reed Distributing and he's been in the biz a long time. He does an astounding amount of business. As for the guy peering in the window...I dont think so Paul runs a pretty tight ship and he wont put up with that stuff.....They hate to see him coming when someone's done something wrong....most of his guys have been around for a long time and the word gets around the network of guys he uses to do his flyers refers to as "walkers". However, he is too expensive for me to use. Flyers are a tricky thing for responses ...it's best to keep it bold and simple.....too much information gets it thrown in the trash ...be clear......and offer something no one else offers at that time...set yourself apart .......the ! you will get phone calls from your flyers ! Sometime you can find a busines to CO-hang with you, small business, cleaners, or mom and pop bizzness... .....then it cuts the price to .05 cents a piece when two ads are going on the door on one sheet. It's pretty easy to find some guys hanging out downtown on early saturday morning who have distributed flyers before. Get some bags pick a couple up they can average 800-900 flyers a day each you usually have to buy them lunch as well as pay them each day and make copies of your map page and drive the route monitoring them...but I have done it and it saves money ...besides you are already in the area when the customers begin to call...hope this helps

Thanks for the info.......I have been....... but I had heard some folks argue the other day to the contrary. I guess our friends charging $15.00 to $20.00 for cuts are probably not the group doing things right....huh ? I echo the frustration of having customers gasp when you quote the correct prices for lawncare....only to hear them say I have been paying twenty dollars........but I dont hear any neighborhood associations trying to kick out the illegals........I guess we just keep doing things the right way and let the illegals have the discount shoppers.....I dunno

Those people that don't charge sales tax and are cutting lawns for $20 are the reason that makes this so difficult to get more dollars for cutting lawns. I try to run my business as legitimate as I can but the lawn maintenance is only a small part of my revenue so the customers that want to pay $20/lawn.... go right ahead. I don't want those type of customers because I have found that they are the PITAs (Pain In The Asses) because they complain the most and cost you the most.

Lance L

the people that charge 20 bux a cut, dont cost me any business, if you do a good job people will stick with you and arent concerned as much about the price. actually most of my customers will pay me whatever i ask, my rate is 36/hr and i use 21" toros, but most of my yards actually bring in more than that.

Hello DFW area,

I work for a COMMERCIAL only hydromulch & sod company, With the season taking off like it does every year, we receive TONS of phone calls a day from residential clients looking for service. I hate to have to turn them away but we are commercial only...so if you need the work e-mail me your name, number and a brief description of the type of work you do, so that i may point them in your direction. I would feel so much better doing that rather than saying...sorry we...Not to mention being able to possibly help others make $$.

Hi guys - did a search for landscapers in NRH and got this site. I hope this isn't inappropriate to post our request on this mb :) We have a small/medium sized back yard that is mostly pool/concrete. About 1/3 of the yard has ground cover instead of grass.

We would like the ground cover removed so we can put down sod. If anyone is interested in coming by to look and give me a price, I'd be grateful. My email is smith2581@sbcglobal.net

Hello,
I was just laid off from a "very corporate" job and have accepted to sell mortgages at a friends small company real estate/mortgage firm. It's going really slow and I was having trouble making rent and such. As a result, I made a deal with my landlord and will be doing all the lawn care for his three properties for discounts on rent and such.

I used to mow lawns while in elementary, Jr. High and High School and am now realizing I really miss lawn care.

Here's the deal, I am finding more and more possible clients as I meet with folks in the field I'm in now. However, currently I am borrowing my brother-in-law's mower, which is a heavy self propelled walk behind that has lost it's self propell. Needless to say it's a whip to mow some of the lawns (2 of the 3). My parents bought me an Echo trimmer at a garage sale and I use a broom for a blower.

I am really interested in getting a small part-time operation going I would like to learn more about the business and what I can look forward too. Any suggestions as to how I might get started?

btw I can see myself owning a large operation in the future!!

Thanks for any/all advice!

I went to Ed's Lawn Equipment in Addison yesterday to get a ballpark quote on a commercial Honda walk behind mower, Echo blower and an Echo combination trimmer/edger. It added up to around $1,700, factoring in gas tanks and misc stuff like that.

I got a quote from an online trailer co in Texas for $1500. It's 5x10 with 4ft mesh sides with trimmer brackets and a 24x24 lockable box.

So, I am looking at or about $3,200 to get set up to get this thing started.

Do you think these prices seem fair?

Thanks,

Michael

Yes, I would say go check with Jim at Mower Medic. Really nice folks. I have done business there in the past. Of course, now that I have my own store I buy from myself. But, you need to check with them, as the total price you mention seems a little high. Also, shop for a used trailer. There are always used trailers in the classified section of the Dallas paper. Unless you plan on hauling off a lot of brush and trimmings, you do not need to spend extra to get a high side trailer. You can pick up a nice new 5x10 utility trailer with ramp for under $800.00, and can often find them used for half that. Use some of the money you save to buy a set of lockable trimmer racks.

Michael Parks
05-12-2005, 02:23 PM
Thank you for all the great info! I'll check out Mower Medic.

I'm looking at the following: (I don't have my worksheet in front of me)
Honda Commercial Self Propelled - $1,050
Echo Backpack blower ~ $259
Echo Combination Trimmer $289 + edger attachment $80 + trimmer attachment $80

These were from memory so they may be "give or take."

I spoke to a gentleman that retired and sold his operation. I can't say how much he has inspired me and I am thankful to him b/c he is full of useful information.

I'm am trying to figure out financing right now. I don't have great credit so I'm kind of getting frustrated. I'm really eager to get this going but am being held back by past mistakes!

Does anyone have any ideas as to a good/lenient financier?

Thanks again!

Does it really cost that much ??????/

z_clark
07-21-2005, 01:11 PM
For door hangers, it seems the price per piece is pretty standard (10 cents per piece). I have tried out "H and H distributing" since then and got a better response rate. If any one has any other companies to suggest, I would love to hear them. We are thinking of putting out 150K hangers next year. Tks.

Also, has anyone tried out "Direct to your Door" here in the metroplex? They sell advertising space on very large hangers and distribute them as well. Their website claims 3.3 cents per ad including hanging. You can find them by searching the web.

Direct to your door is also producing a directory called quick pages. I advertized in it as well with the above mentioned offer to 15,000 homes in Allen& 15,000 homes in McKinney and got a few calles from tire kickers the weeks they went out but no one held on to them and they did not net any Lawncare work.

Hay guys:

I have a problem, I have a tree that needs to come down...

This is a large tree " Not tall just large as in circular" it's a little above the house top. but this tree has been struck by lightning " more than once I think"
it's going to fall on the house one of these days. and there are power lines that may be in the way....

It's in Josephine Texas, about 10 or 15 miles outta Royce city.

anyway I need some one "with insurance" to give me a bid on removing it.

It CAN'T hit the house

It's a problem because no-one " I have talked with" will go that far out.

Just mortar on the natural stone not the edging stone or pavers.

I would say go with Toro. I have never used anything else. Look around at what most people use and you will see nothing but Toro's. Maybe a few Honda's.

There was another post for TX that I responded to, but that was more west of us. I run in Frisco, Little Elm, The Colony, Oak Point area. Just received my TDA license and working on insurance and equipment... any suggestions would be great...

Other than maintenance what else do you guy work on... needing somebody with expertise in deck building and natural stone work...
I am trying to find some business in the Little Elm area, is TJ Hodge still selling or even in business? If so call me at 9729770200 Michael

Hello all,

Just found this site and am very excited. My step-dad and I have owned Jerry's Lawn Care for a little over 3 years. We operate mainly in Arlington, Tx and surrounding area. Mowing is our mainstay but we also do all types of Landscaping design, install and maintenance.

Next year we will be licensed in pesticide spraying. All references are welcome. My email is: zrich82@yahoo.com, my step-dad's phone number is (972)909-1050.

I hope to get to know other reputable, hard-working small business owners to network, learn and grow with.

I think there's enough grass for all of us :)
